I think I've heard contradictory reactions to Will's dad -- some people agreeing with Will that he's unreasonable and harsh, others (like Prussian, above) thinking he's quite reasonable and that it's Will who's got the attitude problem.

I'll just say that the story is told from Will's POV and filtered thru his sensibility, and that you have to take that into account.
