It is hard to explain but I think it is something that happens in various books and movies. Going to a movie could be a trope too if used in sequence with that series. I never would have guessed that sidekicks is a trope but it'd make sense. Once used it appears again and again. Shrek has Donkey for a sidekick for example.

The dictionary is definitely not much help.
