Although I agree there is a certain two dimensional element to Voldermort that JKR managed to avoid with most of her characters, she does (in DH I think?) explain that Tom Riddle is pretty much incapable of decent human emotions as he was conceived under a love potion.
But I agree with the notion that relatable, understandable, or however otherwise the villain is someone I can sympathise with makes them SOOOO much more exciting and/scary.
On a much sadder note, has everyone heard that Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid) passed away?
