Daily Flash Fiction Challenge

Henry grabbed a sandwich and headed down to the basement. Under the stairs was a tiny gray door with a crystal doorknob. His heart was thumping wildly as he opened the door and bent down to get inside.

Blue and orange lights slowly spread throughout his surroundings as he took a seat in the Secretlab Titan chair and put the sandwich near the keyboard. He put on his headphones as he powered up the monitor. His eyes eagerly waited for the game to load and as soon as it did, TomWarrior99 sent him a message: Is the sandwich there. Henry tilted the camera down to show the sandwich and replied:

HGamer11: can u see it?

TomWarrior99: Yes! Ready?

HGamer11: yes

TomWarrior99: great, me too.

Henry picked up the sandwich and his hands were a little unsteady as he moved the camera back up to his face, zooming in so that just his eyes were visible. With an unblinking gaze he stared into the camera until an orange light beamed out. Henry realized he couldn’t blink now even if he wanted to. The light washed through his eyes and a warmth began to envelop his face and head. It traveled down his neck, arms, torso and legs.

He heard a low vibrating hum and then silence. He was disoriented for a few seconds and then he saw him TomWarrior99. “It worked, you’re here,” he said and grabbed the sandwich from Henry.

“Wowwwww,” Henry said “We’re in the game!”

“Hurry,” TomWarrior99 said. “We can beat this level. We bribe the guard with the sandwich and grab the gold.”

The guard took the sandwich and they took the gold.

But it was fool’s gold.

The ground began to collapse. “I have no lives left!” Henry cried.

“Me neither!” said Tom.
