"Bruh" is also too casual and friendly. If they don't know or have no suspicion of who he is, the reaction would be a lot more formal and angrier. And while I think Zachary probably got in, I don't think they'll put Will as a scapegoat. It's entirely possible they'll make an offer, if only because they'll want him closer - after all, if he escaped once, why wouldn't he escape again? (And I'm thinking as a writer rather than as a reader on this one - if they put Will as the scapegoat, they'll enclose him in a different golem mask again but with some potential safeguards. That means either they give him to Zachary or a new member, or they use the corpse-golem spell on him - and in both situations, it's an ending branch. The other is that he gets placed on a mask golem, only to reappear again, far away, and probably rescued by someone else, which feels like a cop out. And, since you pointed out they're confused, the best assumption is that they'll want to keep him close, thinking the masks won't work, and do the same offer.) Another wild thought - everyone there was a "beta" (to steal Philip's term for golems) of the fallen mastermind. They were looking for the book to fight whoever's in command, until it was stolen. Their surprise is when they realize that the book was stolen by the last "beta", who freed himself from the mask. That would be distinct from selling Will out, because while it would seem like it, the outcome is very different. I feel the problem is simply the idea that, after having his life being turned out and abused, to end up in the same situation just doesn't feel right. |
