As long as the story makes sense to the reader/is believable, and the reader understands why this or that happens you have something to work with to show the reader why they should care about whatever it is. No matter where a story starts you can always work before it and after it to create what the reader will be interested in reading. I agree about learning the rules. If you do not know the rules then you have no foundation upon which to know how to break them. I believe that writing is art and craft melded together for the artist using words to paint pictures, complete freedom to be creative.
