Ooops! The almost-entirety of the novel is a time-travel trip to 1880-1881. The villain is a supreme collector of "natural history" memorabilia (as was a flair of upper-class New York City society in late Victorian Era). One of the "good guys" [relative term], Diogenes Pendergast, pretends to be English nobility and participates in cultural activities, including the Grand Tour of Europe. He and two other characters, including the villain, are scions of a grand New Orleans society family.
