When I was a kid, I heard "Step on a crack and break your mother's back." Referring as it did to sidewalk cracks, and with me living out in the boonies, I had to wait until I was both a) in a place with sidewalks, and b) mad at my mom, to test it out.

It didn't work, and I haven't trusted a single superstition since.
