I have to agree with the others who disagree with you. Sometimes the death of the Main Character is needed to give rise to the one who has become something of the new main.
For instance, let's go with, The Walking Dead tv series. For many years, we followed Rick Grimes as he woke up in the world, reunited with his family, and lead the survivors. However, along the way, there is Daryl Dixon - just your generic redneck white trailer trash that rides a bike and use a crossbow. Initially, he's something of an asshole, and no one really likes him. However, he ends up growing up, caring for the rest, and after Rick's apparent death, ends up becoming something akin to the leader or otherwise very important to the group.
