Perhaps a couple things to check. Do you have any folders that contain a large number of emails? Also, and this may seem obvious--when you purged your Trash folder, did you Confirm the purge? Just clicking on Purge Trash won't purge them. There's a fail-safe to Confirm the purge.

Beyond this, you may need help from the SM.
