I like to write and complete something else before I edit. This does 3 things:

1) because I have gone into another world, I forget a lot of the old story, and so can look at it with fresh eyes
2) it leaves a nice time frame for me to help forget
3) as I have done something else and so the story is no longer my "new baby",. I can be much harsher on it.

Anyway, that's the way my brain works...
