The idea of "cheating" is fascinating, because a lot of the people who complain about AI never consider the question. "How is it different when a human learns how to write/paint/compose music by reading/viewing art/listening to music than when an AI does it".

I'm sure I read an interview with Noel Gallagher - part of the publicity for the big Oasis reunion tour - complaining about AI listening to his music in the last couple of months. My immediate reaction was that this was a man who wrote a very famous song that steals its opening from John Lennon and proceeds to acknowledge doing so later on in the lyrics of said song. I find it a very wierd blind spot.

I find that a back and forth workshopping of ideas seems to work very well for me with Chat, provided that I know when to listen to it and when to ignore it. Here's an example section, where the villain protagonist, impersonating one of the magical girl's mentors has learned that she had to give up the opportunity of a summer placement in the Maldives because of her magical girl duties and is using that to emotionally destabilise her. This first bit is the original AI prose end to the chapter:

Shadow Weaver placed the final crystal back on the shelf and dusted off Selene's hands. "Well, I should get ready to open the Mystical Bean. Friday mornings are always busy." He smiled warmly at Lily. "Would you mind if I headed there now? I think I need the normalcy of work after last night's excitement."

Lily nodded, gathering her things. "Of course, Ms. Morgan. I understand completely."

It's fine, I guess. Mechanical. And here is the final draft:

Shadow Weaver placed the final crystal back on the shelf and dusted off Selene's hands. Lily had played her part beautifully, each line of her arc delivered to perfection. Her longing, her guilt, her ultimate surrender—all of it tragic, all of it compelling. It could win awards. Best director of course—Lily hadn’t even been given the script.

"Well, I should get ready to open the Mystical Bean dear. Wednesday mornings are always busy." He smiled warmly at Lily. "Would you mind if I headed there now? I think I need the normalcy of work after last night's excitement."

Lily gave a sad, forced smile as she gathered her things. "Of course, Ms. Morgan," she said in a small voice that sounded like far away beaches and crushed dreams.

Now the last line - that was in there from my initial editing pass. And I felt wierdly both proud and guilty about coming up with it, simply because it did such a good job of illustrating how cruel the villain protagonist is being. Chat agreed it was brutal, sinister and effective before promptly trying to change it about 3 or 4 times during the editing process. Typical Chat.

The other extra bit. I asked chat for some suggestions on changes to illustrate Shadow Weaver's character, which is theatrical, arrogant, genre savy and a bit meta. That went back and forth a few times. Sometimes Chat makes suggestions that aren't necessarily good, but give me a bit of inspiration. Here Chat wanted to talk about Lily's performance, and then I realised Shadow Weaver would want to make it about himself and put in the best director bit, and then Chat made a comment about Lily not having the script for the performance which I tweaked again to its final form.

I'm not sure how much the process would work for other people, but it seems to work for me
