On one hand, "nothing new under the sun". Consciously or subconsciously, we will imitate something - what makes it ultimately distinctive is how it's expressed. There's a reason why the "Hero's Journey" exists - it encompasses a good deal of many stories during time, and even their deconstruction is compared to the original as a contrast. On the other hand, prompts don't necessarily exist on their own. They need a lot of refinement and back and forth, so ultimately what it pours out is what you ask it to do. It can act as an unpaid commission, where it does most of the work, or it can act as a resource to get a different opinion. In imaj's case (from what I can interpret), it seems to be the latter - prompt an already written portion of the chapter and ask for an opinion. I will say, though, that the opinion regarding a "performative writer" worries me. It sounds pejorative - the response is pretty much "treat them like a pariah", only because any kind of interaction would be considered "cheating" and therefore anathema to said writer. I suppose it's taken to an extreme to state a point, but I really doubt there is such an extreme where a writer would refuse even a grammar check. Maybe there are people who refuse to read other material because they're too focused on their story but value beta readers' opinions, and just like that, there are people who don't like AI as a tool but don't feel repelled by a thesaurus or a dictionary as a tool. |
