I live in California where recycling some items are pretty much mandatory and some are encouraged.
Glass bottles, plastic bottles and aluminum cans are pretty much "you shall recycle" but even at work, I see them thrown in a regular trash can. (so I reach in and pick them out.)
Different plastic weights are recyclable and will pay money at recycle shops, but I never can remember to take them. I just put them in my blue recycle bin. I recycle cardboard. They charge for glass bottles to be recycled, but the return is a joke - just pennies - so I usually through them in my bin, too.
Old clothes I try to reuse and usually donate to Good Will or Salvation Army.
I think if practiced in a responsible way, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle are smart concepts to work into life.
