Jobs are very hard to come by here, too. I was not at all expecting this one. It's a pretty bizarre story. You know that Mom's a Ph.D. student at Purdue University. She's been doing some copy editing work for Liz, her main professor. Liz recently became senior editor of Teaching Sociology, which is a big-name academic journal in the field of sociology. She hired a bunch of copy editors. I've been fascinated watching Mom do the work -- it looked really cool. Well. Liz called yesterday and wanted to talk to Mom. I was like, no big deal. The deal was, though, that she wanted to talk to Mom about me doing copy editing of book and film reviews!! Me! I talked with Liz and we worked it all out. She e-mailed me the first three reviews yesterday and I edited one of them last night. I had Mom go over it with me after my initial go at it to make sure I'd done okay. It's really very easy -- I mean, it's the tyep of thing I'm good at. I'm so very flattered that Liz actually hired me. Me! I only get $7 an hour (as opposed to Mom's $14), but that's okay. Liz said, "Your mom gets a high rate of pay because of her having a master's degree." And I'm going, oh, it's just the master's that I don't have. Heh. She didn't even mention that I don't have a BA or even a GED. This is too cool. A job, an actual job, and it's fun and a really good résumé item. I'm an editor for an academic journal!!
