220-year-old Constitution: Living Document
A Living Document
By Donica Delia

The U.S. Constitution has always been and will always remain a living document. The Constitution represents American living. It represents the rights and the freedom of the citizens of the United States. The Constitution was established by the people and for the people of the United States. Still today, the government is updating the Constitution to suit the modern time. The Constitution was established to set limits on the power of the three branches of government.

The three branches of government are the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch. The Executive Branch describes the powers of the president, who carries out the law. The Legislative Branch describes the powers of Congress, who creates and passes laws. And the Judicial Branch describes the powers of the Supreme Court and other federal courts, who review the way laws, are applied. They also interpret the laws. The government was divided up into three separate branches so that each branch has equal power. Just like the three branches of government, the Bill of Rights is very important to the United States.

The Bill of Rights plays a very important role in the Constitution. The Bill of Rights guarantees U.S. citizens rights and protection from the government, meaning that the government cannot take citizens’ rights away without committing a federal offense. There is a long, difficult process for amending the Constitution. The process for adding an amendment is that two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the House of Senate must agree to pass the bill. The bill then goes onto the states. It usually takes about seven years for the bill to be ratified. Without the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, the United States would be almost exactly like it was when King George III was our country’s ruler.
