Getting ready to launch an airplane from an Aircraft Carrier

Taken in Nov 2013, during Andy's first year of being in his Boy Scout Troop, we visited the USS Midway in San Diego, CA. Here in this picture, Andy is giving the visual signal that the airplane has the okay to launch. The Midway using steam catapults to launch the planes. Since the flight deck is short, a catapult is needed for the plane to have the necessary speed to take off once leaving the deck.
