I liked science at school, and was hoping to get a bit of experience in a lab. I didn't really know what to expect; a friend of my dad's had set me up with the job but I expected I'd just be cleaning beakers or something. I biked down to the university and stopped outside a slightly dilapidated old building whose sign read DEPARTMENT OF EXPERIMENTAL BIOCHEMISTRY.
Behind the reception desk was a bored-looking woman with black hair scraped into a vicious bun and glasses. I stood awkwardly while she finished a crossword clue, from which she looked up as though I were a fly that had buzzed into the room. "Can I help you?" she asked, frowning.
"Hi, I'm Conrad Greene, I'm supposed to be starting here today?"
The woman sighed and consulted her computer screen in a desultory way, then pointed a manicured finger at the elevator doors. "You'll be working in..."
