Chapter #3
The lion's head knocker
by: Unknown
The boy ran down the cobbled streets, through the dirty mesh of blackening houses, panting but not stopping and clinging to the golden necklace. Someone else would find the body and the queen's men, those 'police', would deal with it. And who needs the factory when you're gripping gold?!
The necklace was splendid; the boy's ticket to a king's lifestyle, he thought, but a curiousity awakened by the dead woman's unblinking eyes led him to the steps of the orphanage.
He knocked the hoop in the lion's jaw three times and waited. A squat lad with a button nose answered and looked up with accusing eyes. "You is supposed to be at the factory. Mr. Hartship will not be 'appy at this, will he?" The boy wrung his hands like a scheming villain.
"Oh move out of my way. Hartship has some questions to answer."
"Think you've got something on him, Tim? Think you're cleverer?"
Tim pushed past him with the fist that clung onto the golden necklace, whisperng, "When I'm out of here and when I've got my own home and I'm taking rides on the Iron Horses, I'll remember not to remember you."
