This choice: Jessica runs, but soon stops when she sees that the dragon isn't chaseing her. • Go Back... Jessica stared deep into the dragon's eyes, and she was too frightened to even move. As the dragon stared at her, she cursed herself for staying. "Why did I stay?" she cursed, "That was stupid of me. Now, I'm going to be this monster's afternoon snack. Unless, I run." Jessica thought about it, and the more she thought about it the more she doubted that she would be able to outrun the dragon. Though, she had to try, because it was her only chance.
The dragon took one step forward, and Jessica knew that she had to act at that moment. She had to act before it was too late. Jessica turned and ran for her life. She ran as fast as she could fore her life depended on it. She didn't stop and didn't look back, because she feared that she would see the dragon hot on her tail.

The half dragon was in shock and surprise. He just stood there and watched as the girl turned and ran away from him. He couldn't believe it. He had thought that he had finally found a human that could help him, that could be his friend, but it wasn't true. She was just like all the other humans that have run away from him.
Though, the half dragon didn't want to give up hope. So, he gave one last effort to stop her. "Please, Wait!" he pleaded, "Don't go, please, come back." However, the girl was too far away and she couldn't hear him.
The hope of ever being able to talk to someone and to befriend someone slowly faded as the girl ran farther and farther away. The worst part of the encounter with the girl was that it reminded him of the time when his father had left him. Despair and sorrow entered the half dragon's heart and he started to cry uncontrollably.

Jessica finally turned her head to see if she was far from the dragon. She expected to see its mouth agape and its razor sharp teeth inches away from her, but she didn't even see the dragon behind her. Jessica stopped running and realized that the dragon wasn't even chasing her. Jessica listened carefully and heard a strange animal sound coming from the direction she came from. Jessica had never heard anything like it and she assumed that it was coming from the dragon. As she listened to it, she realized that it was a sad and depressing sound.
Jessica picked up her courage and walked back in the direction she had come from. Once at the clearing, she saw the dragon lying on its stomach and crying. The dragon was actually crying, and there was no mistaking it! Jessica didn't know what was wrong with the dragon, but she felt bad for it. She never could just watch something cry, not even a dragon.
She started to approach it to comfort it. She stepped on a stick and it snapped. The dragon, still crying, peeked up at her. Upon seeing her, the dragon placed its head back on the ground and covered its eyes with its hands. The dragon then spread its massive wings and stretched them around to cover its head.
The dragon looked miserable and Jessica wanted to help it. "Oh, you poor thing," Jessica said as she approached the dragon, "What's wrong?"
Jessica wasn't expecting an answer, but to her surprise, she got an answer. "You," the dragon told her. Jessica was completely awestruck by the dragon. The single word was sort of muffled, but clear enough to understand that it was human speech. Jessica thought that she was hearing things at first, but deep down inside, she knew that she really heard the dragon speak. Jessica had been always taught that dragons were mindless, blood-thirsty, heartless monsters, but so far, this dragon had been the exact opposite of what she had been taught.
"E-Excuse me?" Jessica asked. She said her words quietly, due to the sudden surprise of the dragon's ability to speak.
Although she had nearly whispered it, the dragon had excellent hearing and was able to pick up her voice. The dragon replied, "You humans are the reason I'm like this. You humans think that I'm a monster and you run off screaming. I looked into your eyes and I realized that you are just like all the others. So, go ahead and run away. Just run away from me. You don't care about me. No one cares about me. I'm a freak."
Jessica started to realize what the dragon was so depressed about. The dragon was alone and it didn't help that everyone ran away calling him a monster. Jessica felt really sorry for the dragon. Jessica walked up to the dragon and knelt down beside his massive head which was covered by his wings. Jessica placed her hand on the thin membrane of the wing and the dragon shivered at the touch. "Please, don't cry," Jessica pleaded.
Suddenly, the dragon uncovered his head with his wings and hands and stood up on all fours. He lowered his head so that his muzzle was right in front of Jessica. Then he shouted, "Shut up! Don't try to understand what I'm going through, because you couldn't possible understand. You have no idea what its like to see a human everyday and they just take one look at you and think that your're just some vicious beast. Everyday I go through that and no one seems to understand that I'm not a monster. Every time, I try to explain to them that I'm not going to hurt them, but every time they run away. What do you humans want from me? Do you want me to be a monster? Well, if that's the case, I think I should be a monster just to show you what a real blood-thirsty beast is." The dragon then roared in Jessica's face. He showed her his sword like teeth and asked, "How do you like that? Is that what you want me to be?"
Any normal person would have been frightened by the dragon's display, and any normal person would have fled the scene. However, Jessica wasn't any ordinary girl. Jessica was a little frightened, but she didn't run away, because she knew that the dragon wasn't really going to harm her. He wasn't yelling at her because he was angry. He was just depressed and lonely, and Jessica realized that.
The dragon lied on its stomach again, but he didn't lay his head on the ground. Jessica got up and hugged the dragon around the neck because she knew that that was what he needed the most. The dragon was shocked by this, because he thought for sure that she would run from him. "W-What are you doing? Why aren't you running away?" he asked her.
"I'm not going to leave you," Jessica told the dragon as she hugged him tightly, "I want to help you."
"You'd really do that?" he asked.
"Yes," Jessica answered.
The dragon backed up so that she was in front of his muzzle again. This time, the dragon said to her as tears fell from his eyes, "Thank you. Oh thank you, Jessica." The dragon then nuzzled her, because he was just so overwhelmed with joy. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
