This choice: a boy, a fighter like Bohwan, wanting to travel the world, knew of the curse • Go Back...Chapter #6Nolan, the powerful warrior by: who-me a strong and powerful warrior. At the age of sixteen, the child stood over six feet tall in his human body, his blue eyes complemented by thick brown hair on his head. The irony of his face, though, was he never grew any facial hair, always maintaining a child-like face on top a warrior's body. His human body also showed his skill and craft were not to be taken likely as one would be hard pressed to find even single ounce of fat on his muscular body. But physical power wasn't his only strength. True to his word, Fionn raised the child, who he renamed Nolan after the child turned five and showed no magical capabilities, but his physical power seemed likely to make him follow similar paths as his birth father. Before that day, he was called "My child" and "son". And being raised by Fionn, Nolan was taught many of the mage's philosophies on compassion, life, and equality. He studied to increase his knowledge and would meditate to ensure his inner spirit was at peace.
But despite this image, Nolan's other side was a beast ten times or more greater than his human one. For in his full minotaur form, he stood closer to fifteen feet tall and the mightiest boulders would only mildly inconvenience the child. His thick skull could knock over a tree with ease and the horns mounted on top were strong enough to take on a sword and possibly break it.
When he turned seven, Fionn told him about the curse upon him, how some days, he'd look like Fionn and other, he was a beast. But Fionn comforted the child saying, "Nolan, my son, what your outer appearence looks like matters not. It is who you are inside. One day, you will find a girl who will love you for the inner you and care not for whether you look like a minotaur or man."
"Father, girls are weird and crazy! I'll never like them," Nolan responded.
Now at the age of 16, Nolan has helped his father with his work as a mage by collecting herbs and doing errands to the near by village. And on a not so impressive morning, did Nolan, again, feel his father's wake up call.
"Oh great spirit of water, bringer of life, my dear son is being a pain. Please help me and wake him with rain," Fionn said holding his staff as he cooked breakfast. Then there came a lot of spurting from a room on the first floor of the house they lived in.
"Dad, why don't you come and wake me like normal parents do?" Nolan asked after he dried off and dressed. He was completely human as he sat down at the table.
"Because neither of us are normal," Fionn said, putting some eggs, bacon, and pancakes on a plate for his son.
"True enough," Nolan said, "But what is normal anyway?"
"Nolan, I told you when you were six, no philosophy at the breakfast table. I maybe an enlightened mage, but I do have my limits," Fionn said sitting down and placing the plate before his son. Fionn took a sip of his tea and waited. When Nolan was drinking some goat milk, Fionn asked, "So, will you tell Ashley your secret today on your picnic?"
Nolan soon began choking on his milk and looked at his father. "Yes," Nolan said once he had regained himself. "I feel she will accept me for me."
"And if she doesn't?" Fionn asked.
"Then I do not know what I will do," Nolan replied, "I will probably want to ask her why and may run away."
"Not a very wise action," Fionn said. "Sounds a bit like what Bowhan would do," Fionn thought to himself.
"I know, but as you said, reason loses all power when it comes to the heart. I'll be back later father," Nolan said before he went and prepared for the picnic. He was planning on taking Ashley up the mountains a bit, far from any traveler or passer by, perfect for becoming his other side. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
