It was Vasu, of all the people. She stood there on the threshold, tall and lovely with that schoolgirl complexion I so well remember. I hugged her and screamed with joy. She was equally excited.
‘Vasu, is that really you, you devil? Why didn’t you answer my letters?’
‘ You haven’t changed much, have you Jai? The same old overwhelming enthusiast.’
She came through the hallway and we made ourselves comfortable on the settee while exchanging bits of news. I made some coffee a little later, got some wafers out and carried the tray to the living room.
‘ So how’s is it with you Jai?’ She said, sipping some coffee, her smile brightening the room. She was a very close friend of mine through school to college. Our families used to be close too. After she got married and left for a distant city, our meetings were few and far between.
‘ As you see. Alone, happy and carefree. Excited as always about my job, editing and proofreading.’
‘ No Mr. Right yet?’ she asked her eyes shining.
‘ Now Vasu don’t you want me to be a little more independent than the married ones, even the so called happily married people?’ I asked her.
Vasu’s color changed visibly. She fell silent. Looked a bit preoccupied.
‘Yes Jai, you are right. As a matter of fact I wanted to ….’, her eyes clouded. Haltingly, she revealed some stunning things.
