You open the envelope yourself

You start opening the envelope. The seal is firm and takes a bit of work.

Once open, you quickly unfold the card, only to catch a glimpse of an ornate symbol before the surface darkens to absolute illegibility. Turning the card around and into the little remaining daylight, you can't even see a trace of an imprint of what was there before.

They hold hands now and Karen says "A shame you can't go and just watch this. You could still go as our guest for the evening but I'm afraid you might not like that now that the option of just being a spectator has been removed. You would have to be a subject of us and any other guests who want to see."

Steve adds "It was that way when we first went. It did work fine, at the end. It just took some effort to make it to the end."

After a second she adds "If you want to go, the rules are concrete, John. They are expecting either you by yourself or with us as our offering to other guests. otherwise it will be only us."
