“Head for Procol Kilia”, you say. “I’ve heard of it before and I like the idea that it’s not dominated by anyone – we’ll just step carefully to avoid the spies. I’m confident that this state-of-the-art craft can handle whatever this Houston-Knox field throws at us.”
With that Buck punches in the coordinates and engages the warp drive. “Warp drive engaged”, he says calmly. “Approaching the field...entry within fiv...four...three...two...one...”
Outside a blue cloud envelops the ship. All instruments read normal.
“I think we’re ok”, you say before the ship starts shaking violently. A variety of alarms start blaring.
“Hull stress at seventy percent and climbing fast”, Buck screams over the noise. “External energy flux is draining our shields...shield capacity at eighty percent and falling...”
“Engage flight stabilizers”, you scream.
As the flight stabilizers engage, the shaking of the ship reduces.
“Sir”, Buck yells, “the hull stress is at one hundred percent and the shield capacity has fallen to twenty percent...we can activate the auxiliary power source and redirect it to the shields...but that means we won’t have backup power if we experience and emergency later...what do we do?”
