Early the next morning, which was a Saturday, Frank knocked on John's door. A sleepy Rachel, wearing a robe over her nightgown, opened the door, cup of coffee in hand.
"Well Frank, what in the world are you doing here so early," she smiled. She and Frank had always gotten along well as brother and sister-in-law.
"John and I were working on a project," he answered happily as he walked into the house. "Good morning, by the way, Rachel. I'll have mine with cream and sugar." He was always happy to see Rachel. In fact, he thought she was probably more attractive than his own wife, Irene, who, while younger with a pretty face, did not have the shapely, plump figure that Frank admired in Rachel. He knew that apart from the occasional sisterly hug, though, that it was look but no touch when it came to Rachel.
"Already workin' on it," Rachel walked back to the kitchen to prepare Frank some coffee. She always enjoyed having Frank over because John liked having him over. The idea of the brothers working on a project early on Saturday morning was a bit unusual, but it wasn't unusual for them to collaborate on everything from home movies to building projects.
"Frank," John said, as Frank entered John's basement workroom with the coffee that Rachel had generously supplied. "I meant to ask you last night, what became of the guys you swapped? Did you swap them back like you did the animals?"
"Actually, no I didn't," Frank answered. "I was just too freaked out. I guess they're at home now, and feel that everything is normal."
"Too weird," John said. "If they're both married, are they having sex with each others body with each others wife?"
"I guess," Frank laughed. "Well... once I figure this thing out I'm sure I can come up with something better for that bastard Evans. He may be in a better situation now, and I definitely owe that turd for firing me."
John looked at Frank and saw his hard, bitter look. He knew that Frank could be vindictive and unforgiving, and he had often tried to help Frank get past those emotions as they had always gotten him into trouble.
"So...who are we going to test this on?" Frank asked.
"My idea," John said. "Was to test it on our next door neighbors, and then change them back."
John's neighbors were a mother and her grown daughter, and Frank said, "Sure, that'll be a good test."
The brothers opened the garage door about halfway. John explained that the next door duo went walking every Saturday morning at about this time. Just as he finished telling Frank the plan, the neighbor's door opened.
"Here, let me try it this time," John said.
"Okay, okay, I'm not going to touch it though, and then we'll know if reality is affected for those who don't touch the device if I don't see the change."
John took the device from Frank, and as he was gripping it in his hand he accidentally depressed the red lightning bolt button. "Uh, Frank... I think I just pushed the button, and I'm not sure where this was pointed."
"Oh, great...already having problems with the test. I guess just point it away from anyone and push it again...maybe that will reset it."
John said, "Okay," and pointed the device away from the street back toward his garage. Just as he pushed the button, though, Rachel walked out of the house to retrieve the newspaper. Before John could stop himself, he had pushed the button and instantly he saw Rachel continuing to walk outside, but now...
She had Frank's head atop her voluptuous pink robe-clad body.
John looked over toward Frank, and there was Rachel's head on his brother's body, now walking toward the newspaper at the bottom of the driveway. "I hope you guys aren't getting into any mischief," she casually said.
"John," Frank said quietly so Rachel couldn't hear as she got the paper. "So...did that reset it? I guess we'll find out after Rachel gets back inside and we try it out on the ladies." He gestured with his feminine hand toward the mother and daughter who were already walking briskly down the street away from them.
John was so shocked seeing his brother's close-cropped head on his wife's body, that he was speechless.
"Here, John, since you're all thumbs with this thing let me give it a try," he reached out to take the gadget. John, still amazed and tongue tied, reached out absentmindedly with the device. As Frank went to take it, John released it too early, and it hit the concrete hard, and a spark flew.
"Oh man," Frank said. "This thing may be broken now! What's wrong with you?!"
By this time, Rachel had disappeared back into the house, taking long steps, but with a feminine gait, in Frank's body.
John...
