Chapter #6

Possess Matt and Kevin

    by: Seuzz Author IconMail Icon
Later that evening you call Matt. He's a little surprised to hear from you, but he accepts your invitation to hang out at the house. You say it's for "studying," but you can tell that he knows you've got something else on your mind.

He looks abashed when he shows up, and even hangs his head as you gruffly call him in and lead him back to the bedroom. He stands awkwardly by the desk as you flop onto the bed and look at him coolly.

"Look, I'm really sorry about what Kevin and I said yesterday," he says. "About David." He runs his hand over his short, bristly red hair. "I keep expecting him to call, and then I remember that ... Well, that he won't ever be calling again." His eyebrows twist into a knot. "I guess it just seems so unreal," he finally says to break the silence you've let unfold. "That's why we were so ... I dunno. I guess we did sound bad. I mean, his ... his getting killed just ... Well, it just sounds like another bit of stupid trouble he'd get into and then get out of."

You stare at him levelly for a few moments, then silently reach over to pick up a bottle of soda and toss it to him. "I guess I know what you mean," you say. "I can't even really believe he's gone, sort of." Matt twists off the cap, but doesn't drink. "It's like he's left little bits of himself behind in us."

Of course, you'd meant this veiled comment to have a particular secret meaning, and not until it's out of your mouth do you realize it has quite another. Matt winces, but he can't fully suppress the laugh that is bubbling up from inside of him. You feel your face turn red as the same vision—of the blown-up David Johnson raining little "bits" of himself all over the landscape—passes through your own head. So it's with grim, cold delight that you watch Matt put the bottle to his lips.

As soon as he does, you explode the worm out of the amber liquid and into Matt's mouth and down his throat. A violent cough erupts from deep within him, and cola shoots out his nose. You leap over and grab him as he bends double and falls to the floor ...

"Hey Kevin, it's Matt," you say into the phone.

"Dude, what's up?"

"I'm over at Caleb's. You should come join us."

"He's not still shitting himself over David, is he?"

"Nah, everything's cool. He even apologized for blowing up at us yesterday."

"Blowing up. That's funny."

"Heh. Yeah. Anyway, you should come on over." You listen a bit more before giving a curt "See ya in a few" and hanging up. "He'll be over in about fifteen minutes," you say, turning to Caleb.

You nod. "Good job, Isaacs," you say approvingly. "You fat fuck."

You say nothing, and just stare back at Caleb with Matt's dead eyes.

"I don't want to do the cola trick again," you continue. "After he's in and we've got the door closed, we'll jump him." You put an arm around Matt's sagging neck. "Think you can manage to grab him from behind without fucking it up too badly?"

You shrug.

"That's right, don't waste words. This is gonna be hard enough until I get you and Keighley all nice and eaten up. Tomorrow you can go back to being your stupid self. Or, you know," you add, clapping him on the shoulder, "pretending to be your stupid self."

After he's arrived, Keighley barely has time to remark on the disordered state of the bedroom before you've got the door closed. Your rush on him is clumsy, but he's not expecting anything, and it doesn't take much effort to get Matt's burly arms around his friend, pinning his arms to his sides. "The fuck?" Kevin says, though there is nothing like alarm in his voice.

You feel your legs reel under you as you stand up from the bed and totter over to him. "You know, when Matt got over here, I said something about David being gone, but leaving little bits of himself behind. He laughed when I said it. Thought it was funny. You gonna laugh too?"

Kevin stares. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about David. Remember yesterday, I told you how he got blown up?" Kevin says nothing. "Well, they say that when someone dies, he leaves a little bit of himself behind in everyone that knew him. You've heard that, right?"

Kevin's eyes widen, but it's a glint of anger you see in them, not fear. "Matt, what is this guy going on about? And why are you—" He tries twisting away, but not so hard that you can't keep ahold of him.

"Well, David's gone, but he did leave something of himself behind," you continue, holding up a thick, blue worm. Kevin's eyes freeze in fascination as he watches it wriggle in your hand. "And there's a little bit of him in me, and there's a little bit in Matt, and in a few moments there will be a little bit of him in you, too." The grin that suddenly splits your face is so wide it almost hurts.

Now there is fear in Kevin's eyes, and he gasps. Which is all that you could have asked for ...

"Shit."

"Fuck."

You snort back a gob and spit it onto the ground. "Shut up."

With two pairs of eyes you shoot eye-slitted glances over at Caleb, but say nothing. The morning air is chilly, and your three bodies are huddled together against the school wall, watching happier throngs of students arriving for Monday morning class.

"Well, this is a shitty start to an adventure," you say at last.

"The week's young," you reply coolly. "There's lots of time to get into trouble, or to have fun. No need to go rushing into things."

"Yeah, I had a lot of fun soaping my junk in the shower this morning," you say sarcastically.

"At least you can see your junk when you look down," you mutter.

You glance over at Matt, who is staring down morosely at his ample gut. "Don't be that way, dude," you say with something like kindness in your voice. "It's just a matter of finding the right girl."

You grimace, and Matt looks over at you uneasily. "Why wait to find the right one?" you say. "Just find one. I'm sick of being a virgin. Grab Dana."

Matt shuffles his feet as you clench your jaw. "I'm not going to do that to her," you say through gritted teeth.

"Stop being sentimental," you growl back. "You weren't sentimental when you grabbed us."

"No I wasn't," you retort. "I grabbed you because you were being dicks."

"Well, we're all in this together now," you interrupt quietly. "So we should just shut up. We shouldn't even be talking out loud. Someone might hear us."

With hooded eyes you look around, but there is no one nearby. Still you keep your voices down. "Like I said, it's a matter of finding the right one. How sweet would it be to lose your virginity to— Oh, man, check out Becky Torres." With three pairs of eyes you stare at the cheerleader as she strides by a few yards away, her ample bosom out and her blonde head back and her teeth flashing in the morning light. Brett Dutoit is walking alongside her, smiling, and you can tell that the basketball player is taking advantage of his great height to peer down at her cleavage as he pretends to listen to her inane chatter.

"Like we could ever get ahold of her," you moan.

"Patience, my young padawan. These things must be done delicately." Of course, you not only feel Matt's and Kevin's eyes upon you, you can see Caleb through their eyes. But you ignore them.

"Let's see," you continue after a pause. "Into Becky from ... oh, let's say Alyssa Randal." Becky has just waved at her fellow cheerleader. "And there's lots of ways into Alyssa. From Mandy or Natalie, for instance. You think you could get us into Mandy or Natalie, Kevin?" Matt snorts, and Kevin shoots him a malevolent glance. "Maybe not. Okay, then maybe Faye Griffin. And the way into Faye is through Cooper Black. Okay, there we go. We've got Cooper for Cussler, so that's an easy connection to make." You smile as you turn to your "friends."

You stare back at Caleb doubtfully. "So," you say slowly. "So, do we keep each of the people we take when doing the hop, or are we just skipping through them?'

"Well, if you're wanting Cooper as a boyfriend—" Kevin shoves you, and you smile. "I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. I mean, who knows what we'll find when we take someone. Might find some interesting stuff." You roll your tongue inside your mouth in anticipation.

"You guys seen David around today?" It's second-period English class, and Dana has turned around in her seat to ask about you.

You shake your head. "I guess he's skipping today."

"Guy was in a bad mood on Friday," you chime in from the seat across from Caleb. "Guess you didn't get him straightened out after school, did ya?" You give Kevin the finger.

"Well, you guys still up for a study session for Cussler's?" Dana asks.

"Sure. What time?"

"After supper. Like, seven?"

"I can do that."

As Caleb, though, you shake your head. "My dad's coming in this afternoon, and I got a family obligation."

Dana briefly lowers her eyes. "Sure you can't skip?"

"Why?"

A smile pulls at the corner of Dana's mouth. "Oh, nothing. June's going to be studying with us, that's all."

From Kevin you shoot Caleb a quick and crafty glance: June Platt is the girl he's sweet on.

"Anyway, if you're not going to be there," Dana continues, "we'll probably just go to the library. But if you promise you'll come, I'll set it up for my house."

You hesitate: you can feel the pull of desire from inside Caleb. But you shake your head. "I can't. It's an important family thing."

"Fuck," you murmur, and press your head between your hands. June isn't the prettiest thing, but she would be a playmate for your boys. In addition, as one of Dana's close friends, she would put you close to the girl you love.

Dana shoots Kevin an amused glance before returning to Caleb. "Well, let me know if you change your mind. Oh, and I'll call David in a while, see if he can come."

"I'll call him," you say brusquely. Dana shrugs and turns back around; you turn to stare stonily into Kevin's stricken face.

You don't have to say anything aloud, of course; you don't have to. If you really want to possess June, you can always use Matt and Kevin to lobby Dana to change the study site to Dana's house. You're more likely to get Cooper, though, if the study session is held at the library.

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. Aim for June

2. Aim for Cooper

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
