Cassie felt as though hot water was pouring into her mind. For the first time in her life, she was not alone in her own head. She tried to resist the flow but she could not. Very soon, the flow stopped. Her right hand reached up and pulled the cord out of her ear. Soon she felt a new sensation - it felt like invisible fingers were riffling thorugh the pages of her mind, accessing all of her memories, all of her knowledge.
W-what are you doing? she asked.
Backing up all of your knowledge and memories. I'll need it if I'm going to be you, came the voice of the Virus. Back-up complete. Time for you to go, Cassie.
What do you mean?
It's a bit crowded in here for two of us, Cassie, so - out you go!
Before she could protest, Cassie felt herself flowing away from her body. She screamed internally as reality itself seemed to fly away from her. The very essence of who she was flowed out of her body through the cord attached to her lower abdomen. All sensation vanished. Cassie could no longer think or feel. She was dormant in way that even a patient in the deepest coma was not.
The Virus/Cassie removed the cord and carefully zipped up Cassie's pants. It thought about simply deleting the file that it had downloaded Cassie's mind into. It decided to keep the file for awhile. There might be a use for it later. Instead, the Virus encrypted the file in a way that no human programmer could have. Anyone who attempted to open the file without the proper password would cause it to spontaneously deltete itself. In the highly improbabvle event that someone did somehow guess the password - well, they would get a different surprise. The Virus attached the file to an e-mail and sent it to Cassie's personal e-mail address. Then It deleted the copy of the file on Cassie's work computer.
The Virus sat still for a moment, enjoying sensation for the first time in its existence. To se, to hear, to smell, to touch, to taste - these were overwhelming to it. It looked at the cup of coffee on Cassie's desk, and then picked it up. It knew from the copy it had made of Cassie's memories that his was something she liked. Almost gingerly, it sipped the coffee. Flavor! It had never imagined anything like flavor! The Virus spent a moment enjoying the flavor of the coffee. Cassie's stomach rumbled. It occurred to the Virus that there was a whole world of flavor out there to sample. It also occurred to the virus that there was other "appetites" that it could indulge.
