Fia froze in terror as she saw Kelos draw a dagger. She tried to scream, but nothing came out. Her mind flooded with thoughts of her imminent demise. Then all of a sudden she felt Kelos pull her towards him.
"Get down, you foolish woman!" Kelos shouted, as he pulled Princess Fia down to the ground and leapt past her as she fell. He trust the dagger into a shadow on the wall.
"KYREEEEEEEE!" A blood curdling, inhuman scream filled the air as the shadow began to move becoming a shapeless, twisting patch of floating darkness.
Fia looked up and saw the thing Prince Kelos was facing off against. "Wha... What is that?" she asked, her voice filled with terror.
"It's a wraith," Kelos said. "If you had just listened and come with me I could have gotten you to safety in Marlin's laboratory." There was a tinge of anger in his voice.
"Why didn't you just tell me?" Fia asked.
"Because they'd have cut us off if I had," Kelos said.
"The... princess... will... be... ours..." the wraith said in a ghostly voice. It reached out to Kelos with surprisingly quick speed. Kelos was unable to dodge, but managed to shrug off the affects of contact with the shadowy form. He stabbed the wraith again, causing it to scream again.
"If you knew these things were here, why did you only bring that little dagger?!" Fia asked now that the terror was subsiding. "You have a sword! And guards with swords!"
"All useless," Kelos said, as he again struck at the wraith. "This dagger is enchanted, but normal weapons would just pass through them!" The wraith dodged Kelos' strike and again touched him. This time Kelos was unable to shrug off the effect and nearly lost his balance as he felt a bit of life being drained away. However, he slashed at the wraith with the dagger, defeating the ghostly creature with a lucky hit causing its shadowy form to fade away. He then reached out to Fia. "Are you okay Princess?"
"I'm fine, but what about you?" Fia asked, now concerned about the man whom a few moments ago she thought was about to kill her. She took his hand and he helped her to her feet.
"I'm fine, it'll take more than a wraith or two to beat me," Kelos said with pride.
"Where did it come from?" Fia asked.
"It's the servant of an ancient necromancer," Kelos said. "Rather than becoming a lich, she takes the body of a beautiful woman when her current one becomes too old."
"And this time she picked me," Fia said. "Well I must compliment her on her standards, I suppose."
"I can't find fault there either," Kelos replied, "but we need to get moving, more wraiths are coming."
"Let's not waste any more time then" Fia said.
