When the time was right and Phillip was sure that none of James' relatives would be coming around, both James and Phillip moved to a place where no one knew either of them. They became roommates. Phillip had used the machine on himself for the last time to change his name (in his head) to Dr. James Moriarty Ph-D. This was the best solution since he liked having the credentials of being a 'doctor' but he didn't want to put in the time to get the actual degree. Besides Phillip did have the intelligence to be a doctor. The former James Moriarty had his name changed to Phillip French of course. His intelligence had been lowered and between experiments the new Phillip worked at a fast food restaurant. James had decided he preferred to be called Dr. Moriarty and so to everyone around him and even to himself he referred to himself from now on not by his first name James but by Dr. Moriarty a title he thought he had earned.
Undisturbed Dr. Moriarty performed experiment after experiment on his willing roommate James. He would make changes to preferences, knowledge and memories and other mental traits of James. Dr. Moriarty started a series of experiments to change James memories. Dr. Moriarty wanted to see how changing one's memories effected their personality. It was at this time that Dr. Moriarty decided he needed another test subject. He needed a control who he wouldn't change but had memories he could feed into Phillip. Dr. Moriarty's machine couldn't do direct mind to mind transfers. It was complicated because you had to either place the memory in an unused part of the brain and then connect it to other memories or you had to replace a specific memory with another and the memory location had to be chosen correctly for things to make sense.
