Chapter #4

Something else

    by: Unknown Author IconMail Icon
The high school hallway buzzed with the usual chaos—lockers slamming, laughter echoing, and the occasional shout of a teacher trying to maintain order. I leaned against a row of lockers, invisible to the human eye, my borrowed form of a 17-year-old boy nothing more than a vessel for my amusement. My gaze settled on two boys deep in conversation near the water fountain.

Josh, a lanky teen with glasses perpetually sliding down his nose, was listening to his friend Chris with a look of polite disinterest. Chris, on the other hand, was animated, his hands gesturing wildly as he spoke.

“Dude, you’re missing out,” Chris said, grinning. “Having a girlfriend is the best. She texts you good morning, holds your hand between classes, and—oh man—the kisses? Chef’s kiss.” He mimed the motion, and Josh rolled his eyes.

“I’m good, Chris. I’ve got midterms coming up, and the physics club needs me to—”

“Ugh, you’re such a nerd,” Chris groaned, slinging an arm around Josh’s shoulders. “Live a little! You’re gonna graduate and regret never having a high school romance.”

Josh adjusted his glasses. “Doubt it.”

I smirked. "Oh, this is too perfect." With a snap of my fingers, reality bent to my will.

A shimmer passed through the air, unnoticed by everyone but me. Chris’s form flickered—his broad shoulders softened, his jawline rounded, and his short hair cascaded into silky waves. His clothes morphed into a fitted sweater and a skirt, his sneakers transforming into cute ankle boots. By the time the ripple faded, standing beside Josh was no longer Chris, but Christina—a stunning girl with the same mischievous glint in her eyes.

Josh blinked, his brain automatically rewriting history. Of course, Christina had always been a girl. His best friend since middle school. The one who’d braided his sister’s hair at sleepovers and gushed about romance novels. Wait—had she always been this pretty?

"you have to let me prove it to you," Christina was saying, her voice now lighter, melodic. She leaned in, smirking as Josh stiffened. "Seriously, Josh. You’re way too into your textbooks. You need a girlfriend to show you what you’re ignoring."

Josh blinked rapidly, his face flushing. "W-Wait, I—I never said—"

"Too late!" Christina now—declared, looping her arm through his. "We’re dating. Starting now."

"What?!" Josh’s voice cracked. He tried to back away, but she held firm, her grin sharpening.

"Yep! I’m your girlfriend. And as your girlfriend, I insist you walk me to class." She fluttered her lashes, enjoying the way his ears turned red. "And maybe carry my books?"

"I—you—this isn’t—!" Josh sputtered, but Christina just laughed, tugging him forward.

"Relax, nerdy boy. You’ll thank me later." She winked, then dropped her voice to a whisper. "Unless you’re too scared?"

Josh’s protest died in his throat as she leaned closer, her breath tickling his ear. "I—I’m not scared—"

"Prove it," she challenged, grinning when he gulped.

“I—you—this isn’t fair!” he squeaked, but Christina only winked, dragging him down the hall as his protests dissolved into flustered mutters.

"Relax, babe. By prom, you’ll be begging to slow-dance with me."

Around them, students barely glanced their way. To the world, this was normal. Just Christina, the confident girl who’d always been Josh’s longtime crush, finally wearing him down.

And as she dragged him down the hall, his flustered stammering only made her tease him more.
