"Mom!?" you asked, surprised. "How long were you standing there?"
"Long enough. Relax, John, I've known about your powers for six months now. replied mom, quietly. "I knew the instant your pyrokinetic flame first sparked that my brother had passed his lab and knowledge onto you. I have merely chosen my own time to confront you about it."
You allowed your head to fall, frustrated that you were unable to keep your power a secret. Only mom gently lifted your chin so to look you in the eye. "You did well to hid your power from the outside world, John, but is just very little you can hide from a mother, especially when that mother is a witch." said mom with a faint smile. "I am about to tell you a short story about that power of yours, please listen carefully."
"I'm listening, mom." you said, curious.
Hayley nodded quickly. "I'm listening." she said.
Mom took a breath. "My brother was fourteen years older than me, my mom had regressed him into a three year old on her third birthday so I always saw him as my 'grumpy' twin brother." she began. "All of that all changed on my thirteenth birthday, when I received my first magic book. Mom and Catherine told me the truth and why Jack always seemed to be the defiant son towards our mom."
"He never let go of that anger?" you asked, surprised. "At least he stayed a boy."
Mom smiled. "It was not the regression that angered him, John." she said, sadly. "It was the fact he could not be a boy and have power as well. He wanted to get closer to Catherine and I in his own way."
"Through science." stated Hayley.
Mom nodded. "Correct." she said. "Catherine and I tried to get Jack into a closer relationship with us through magic, tried to show him that, as a girl, he could have power as well." she choked on some tears. "Only Jack was more interested in hitting the books, study, study, study..."
"Sounds like he was quite obsessed with his science." you said. "Nothing like my training regiment, it was really fun."
Mom sighed. "Occasionally, we managed to pull Jack away and have some magical fun with him, which he liked, but then his studies would continue." she said. "Yes, Jack was obsessed with his science and pretty much spent most of his life creating the chaotic science you now yield." she began to sob slightly. "In the end, Catherine, Jack, and I all parted on good terms after seeing the fruits of his labor... he had succeeded in making magic work through science."
"Then it was not all a waste." said Hayley. "If that power can be deemed safe, witch boys will be able to grow closer to their sisters and mothers."
Mom sadly shook her head. "it's too unstable, sweetie." she said. "It's also untested. John managed to make his power of chaotic science stable but there are factors involved that Jack did not know or even suspect. Which is why I had originally denied him my permission to pass it on to John."
"Who gave him permissions then?" you asked, startled.
Mom sighed. "Jack turned to your grandmother, the head witch." she replied. "She allowed Jack to pass the knowledge onto you, John, with the understating that I can take it away."
You gasped, fearing that mom was about to do just that but she shook her head. "If I wanted to do that, John, I would have done so six months ago and you'd be called Lucy right now." she stated. "I'm waiting to see if you can handle this power as safely as your sisters handle magic."
"You're afraid that we'd lose John as you lost Jack." said Hayley.
Mom nodded, tears flowing a little. "You managed to juggle work and play while learning your science, John." she said. "As long as you can keep that up, you can keep your science."
You smiled only, it faltered as mom then added, "However, I must insist that you do not use your pseudo magic for a while as I need to teach Mel and Hannah boys are not toys."
"I... understand." you said.
Mom giggled, pulling you into a hug. "Relax, John, you will get your chance to shine." she said. "Take this slow, enjoy the new experiences this will bring you... stop and smell the roses."
You chuckled at mom's last statement. "I'll try." you said.
Mom smiled. "Good boy."
Later that day....
