The clerk in the shop picker up his cell phone and dialed.
"Some kids just left headed for the lake. Might be some weekend fun."
"Man!" Mark was driving as he saw the big arrow and the detour sign blocking the road. The other guys were asleep. Mark turned into the narrow side road and drove on.
"We here?" Shaun woke as Mark pulled to a stop. The road had almost disappeared in the hour since the detour sign. Mark was beginning to worry. He didn't know if the road was wide enough to turn around.
"I think we're lost." he said.
The other boys climbed out of the car and looked around. There was nothing but trees all around them.
"You boys lost?" came a voice back in the woods.
Mark looked over to see two strapping men break through the forest.
"This detour seems to be a dead end." Mark began. He was relieved to have company and these two men looked like they knew their way around the woods.
The first guy smiled showing ragged teeth. He was a big guy, strong but with a big gut as well bulging out of a flannel shirt that couldn't hope to button around it.
"The county road crew up here don't amount to much. They probably forgot to mark the turnoff. You boys out for a wild weekend on your own?"
Up close the smile didn't make him look friendly.
"Yes sir." Mark responded politely. The second guy wasn't smiling at all. He was even bigger than the first and the scar on his cheek made him look fierce.
"Maybe we can give you a hand and get you on your way," the second guy said.
All four boys were now out of the car.
"Give me the keys and I'll get you back on your way." The smaller guy took the keys from Mark and squeezed in. "Stand back with Jethro while I get this turned around.
With some anxiety the boys moved over to the side of the road near the bigger uglier woodsman who watched them with a scowl.
Carefully he maneuvered the car back and forth until finally it was turned around. Meanwhile big Jethro was not on the other side of the road and when the car stopped, he crammed his bulk inside.
"So long boys. You've got about 10 miles back to the nearest phone. Hope that's wild enough for you."
They watched the cloud of dust settle.
"Now what?" Shaun said trying to get a signal on his cellphone.
"We walk." Mark said.
"Wait a minute. He said it was ten miles. I can't do ten miles. Shaun is the long distance runner. Let him go and send someone back to get us." Ross was adamant. "I'm waiting right here while you hotshots go.
Finally Mark and Shaun set out for help while Brady stayed with Ross. Four hours later the rescue party had called in the Sheriff to rescue Brady and Ross but when they got to the end of the road both boys were gone. They searched for hours with no luck. Where had they gone?
