The dridder that strode from the hole was obviously royalty, given the way she carried herself. Arianna had seen that composure in her father and many other rulers she met. Though it was equally obvious that this wasn’t the dridders’ queen, she didn’t match the description.
“Princess Arianna, I am Zanik, princess of the dridder people. I apologize that my mother, the queen, isn’t here herself; she is off fighting with the troops against your people.” the dridder said with a slight bow.
Arianna returned the bow, and was surprised by Zanik’s general attitude towards here. Zanik was talking to her like an equal rather than something that crawled out of a bog, not like virtually every other dridder she encountered. “I greet you in return Princess Zanik. I have come to negotiate peace between our two peoples.”
“Yes, your guide told me. Come, let us go somewhere more private to discuss put peace agreement.” Zanik said before leading Arianna deeper into the web.
The negotiations with Zanik went better, and longer than Arianna expected. It was night by the time Arianna and Zanik finished talking, since the swamp was more dangerous by night than it was by day Zanik insisted that Arianna stay there for the night.
Later that night Arianna heard voices outside her room. But she paid them no heed.
It was Zanik and a pair of dridder gaurds that were talking outside Arianna’s room. “Alright let’s go over the plan one last time.” Zanik said
“We both head for the human city, delivering the treaty to their king. We’ll tell him that we were attacked by the beasts of the swamp on our way there and that the human princess was killed by the beasts.” The first guard said.
“Then during the night we sneak into the king’s chambers and kill him.” The second guard said with eagerness.
“Good, make sure you’re just seen not captured. Meanwhile I’ll deal with the human princess. Without their leaders the humans will be quick to fall.” Zanik finished.
