Something else, huh? Well, for right now things seem to work out pretty well for you, as your mother stomps off to make some kind of phone calls, leaving you free of any obligations. If she had any sense, she could have still set you to work doing something boring now, but instead you're left to your own devices to flip through the TV channels with impunity.
She's gone a long time, as well. You don't really believe she's going to come up with anything too concerning, though. Tomorrow, you'll just have to do this whole same dance again, in a slightly different form, and so on and so forth in perpetuity.
When your mother does finally return to the main room, however, more than three full 'Simpsons' episodes later on, it's with a curious little smile playing at the very corner of her lips. That alone is enough to make you look up, wondering what it is that she does have to present to you.
"Do you remember Laura, your age, just down the road?" your mother asks you, by way of a preamble. Well, you do; of course you do; although you haven't seen her since your mother stopped taking you to coffee mornings at the community centre.
"Yeah, the spazzer girl," you shrug ill-advisedly, but without any real disrespect intended towards the enigmatic Laura. You did used to talk to her a bit when you were both younger. For someone in a highly specialised wheelchair with a speech impediment, she made quite the sharply assertive impression even then. You can't help but wonder how she's doing now.
"Don't you dare!" your mother stares you down, with real danger in her eyes in response to that, prompting you into hurried silence. "She's doing better than you, right now. She's being homeschooled too, turns out." You meet your mother's eye for a second, wondering where she's going with this, before returning to squirming inwardly. The slight smile returns to your mother's lips, and you get a sense that some kind of comeuppance is on its way. "Her mother has quite a bit more experience in that, by now, and we discussed how useful it would be for you to get out of the house every day for a certain deadline, and how good it would be for Laura to have a learning partner. They'd gladly take you, in fact, no strings attached," she pauses for a moment, and the odd smile intensifies. "Well, no financial ones, anyway," she lets you know. "And none for me."
You look at her again, not too intimidated by the thought of classes with Laura, although you're hardly keen. As with today, however, you're pretty confident anything like that will only last as long as you actually want it to. So, where's the harm in giving it a temporary try? It sounds like one way to get your mother off your back for another day or so.
"Yeah, why not?" you shrug dismissively, although your mother's smile still hasn't disappeared.
"There is, however, just one condition for you," she presents what promises to be the coup-de-grace. "Due to Laura's condition, I understand she still has certain 'bathroom' issues. Her mother tells me she finds it easiest to wear an adult diaper, and of course that could be quite awkward for her, if you're going to be around all day..."
"It's alright," you attempt to preempt hurriedly, not really seeing the problem yourself. Surely you don't need to be involved with anything to do with what Laura does or doesn't wear in terms of underwear, or if she occasionally requires any kind of 'special attention' outside the room. "I don't care about stuff like that."
"Good," your mother's smile becomes a grin. "Because the one condition comes from Laura. She'll only agree to it if she doesn't have to be the only one in diapers. If it's the same for both of you, then there's nothing to be embarrassed about. That's the idea."
Boom.
"Wait, what?" you stare, incredulously.
"You heard me," your mother grins.
