You are taken to a room where you meet two children. They are called over and an attendant introduces you. "This is Mrs. Julie Cummings, you new mother."
Two things are obvious as you watch them respond. One is that they are both in reversed gender roles as you are. The 'girl', 8, introduced to you as Mary Elizabeth, is obviously in the same position as you, though only the hair gave it away. The 'boy', 5, introduced to you as Samuel Lester, or Sam, is only a tad feminine in his reactions, but with a butch cut, otherwise looks the part. The other thing you notice is they were here long enough to be coached. The girl 'curtseyed', which meant you had to give her a curtsey back, and the boy shook your hand.
The girl looked at you smiling and said, "It will be nice to have a mommy!"
You looked at the attendant, "They are wonderful children, but I do have one question. Won't their parent's miss them?"
She looked at you, "No. They are orphans and volunteered to be here."
They both look at you expectantly. You realize they are already treating you as 'mommy'. You give mental sigh and say, "I need to talk to this nice lady a while. Why don't you two keep playing until I call you?" They were happy to do that, and you notice that Mary is playing with a doll and Joe is playing with a toy truck.
You look at the woman, "Will I meet my husband separately? Or will he meet us as a family?"
