You saw that your Mother’s door hadn’t been closed all the way so you made that your decision. Besides, if you did this right, your mom would make the other two fall in line. So you slithered over to her door, pushed it open just enough to slide in, then closed it all the way as quietly as you could before retreating under her bed. You saw the bed shift to the noise but then heard her heartbeat slow and go back to sleep. Ok, now that you were in her room and where you wanted to be you had to wake her and tell her about your new look, without making her panic at the sight of you.
“Mom?” you called in a way that sounded like your voice was coming from beyond the door. Luckily your voice hadn’t changed so hopefully she would know it was you. She was a rather light sleeper and used to you or your sisters calling her from your rooms at night.
“Yes Jake, what is it honey?” she asked, still half asleep.
“Can we talk? I got something a little important to tell you. I’m sorry it’s so early but it really can’t wait.” You said and the weight shifted above you as she got up and put her night robe on, then went to the door and opened it.
“Jake, where are you?” she asked quietly as she didn’t want to wake your sisters. Not that she could. She had a hard enough time waking you three in the morning.
“In your room. Please let me explain before you start looking. Just close the door and lay on your bed. I’m underneath but I need to speak with you before you see me.” You answered.
“Ok Jake, this is a little weird but I’ll play along for now. Is there something wrong?” she asked.
“Well that depends on one’s perspective. I think it is cool, freaky and hard to accept but cool. But it is something different that you may not like too much. That’s why I need to explain it the best I can beforehand. Please just get in bed so we can talk.” You requested. You saw the door close and the bed sag down as she sat then she brought her feet up so you couldn’t see them anymore.
“I hope I’m not crushing you down there.” She said with a humorous but still concerned tone of voice.
“No, I’m fine. Now promise me you won’t freak out. I’m having enough trouble dealing with this and I could really use the support.” You said which only made her get more concerned. You had never talked like this before. You could hear her heartbeat change to match her concerned emotions.
“I promise. Now are you going to tell me what is going on?” she asked.
“Ok, I saw a shooting star last night and made a wish… and it came true.” You said, waiting for her to say something.
“Honey, this isn’t a joke or something is it? It isn’t even April yet.” She asked as she knew you and your sisters sometimes pulled pretty convincing April fools jokes from time to time.
“No mom it isn’t a joke. In fact I thought the same way everyone thinks when I wished it but when I woke up I had changed and it was a big change. Not something that can just happen normally and be a coincidence. The best way to describe it was that I wished to become a certain animal I was thinking of at the time and I woke up as one.” You tried to explain in a tone that forbid any kind of indication that you were still joking. It was almost a panicked tone but also nervous.
“Jake… are you… ok I’m going to go out on a limb and just accept this. Ok what animal did you turn into?” she asked as she was understandably confused.
“A snake mom. That’s why I didn’t want you to see me yet. But I’m different than a normal one. But still I looked in the mirror this morning to find a very large King Cobra looking back at me. I almost freaked out… actually I did but… I don’t really know what to do. I know you hate snakes.” You said as you rambled through your explanation as quickly as possible but was anything but smooth with it.
“Are you serious Jake?” she asked again. Her heartbeat escalated from the mere possibility of this being true.
“Yes. I would come up to you but… I don’t want you to scream or run. I thought if I told you first then went over to the corner or something you could see for yourself. I have this fear that if you found me like this in my bed that you would assume the worst and call somebody, anybody, to take the harmful snake away.” You said, slightly quivering in your tone. You had spent your entire morning so far on action to secure the situation but this was the first time you dwelled on possible outcomes.
“Honey, I want to look at you to see if this is true. I need to make sure you’re ok.” she said as the bed shifted.
“Wait! Let me go over to the corner first. Just so you have some distance to get used to it. Just please don’t get freaked out to much.” You said and the movement above you stopped as she looked over at the corner opposite the door and about 10 feet away from the bed. She was redoing her room so it was pretty clear and bare, except her bed and a few things in the closet.
“Ok, go ahead. That might be a better idea. If you’re not joking then sticking my head underneath the bed with you would only make me freak out worse.” She agreed she prepared herself as much as she could then you slithered toward the corner, hoping she wouldn’t react poorly.
