Chapter #2

Aaron

Hey, Aaron here, I'm 16 years old from Maine. I'm an honor student with perfect grades. My girlfriend dumped me in April because I was too busy studying to spend time with her. I passed with flying colors and I don't miss her anyway. She failed and is probably going to have to repeat the year, her and her new boyfriend, who just so happens to be the quarterback. I hope they both fail. Am I bitter? Yes.

Right now my sister (Hannah) and I are visiting our cousins in Hawaii. Alex is 14, Maeve is 15, and Arnold is 17. They are all tall, tan and blond haired. Me? I don't tan, I burn. My hair is brown, but I have "ginger skin", as my sister calls it. I wouldn't say I am tall, exactly. More like, medium, although they're not perfect, either. Maeve is just a tad overweight, Alex has dyslexia, and Arnold, well, his name and his hands are… tiny. Other random facts: Maeve is really pretty. Oh, maybe I didn't mention it, but Alex looks kinda like a girl, but not on purpose. Arnold has a girlfriend named Christina, who looks like a supermodel but has no personality at all. My ex was like that, too.

So anyway, all of us (Arnold, Hannah, Alex, Maeve, Christina, and I) were sitting inside one day while it was raining and we got on the topic of the differences between men and women.

Arnold was saying how girls have it easy because nobody expects anything of them and they can get whatever they want by flirting. Needless to say, there was a chorus of indignant replies. I just pretended to zoned out and fell asleep, but you got thinking about Arnold’s argument. Maeve and I were up last night until 2 in the morning, something that never happened normally, watching movies.

We were both really tired but right before we went to bed she said, “Can you believe Arnold saying that girls have it easy?” I was fixing to pass out so I just said it, “Well from a guys perspective I can’t really argue with him.” I say rolling over expected her to just accept that and go to bed. “Wait what?” she says a little confused that I was siding with him, “Well, the majority of the worlds power is held by men, and most mean are weak minded when it comes to a woman’s charms, I mean you should know all about that.” She then sits up, “And what is that suppose to mean?” she says giving me a piercing look that I could feel without even seeing, I then roll over and say, “Have you taken a good look in the mirror, you’re really pretty and your only fifteen, in a few years you’ll have guys eating out of the palm of your hand.” I say laughing

But she seemed offended, “But I don’t want everything just handed to me!” she says, “Well you say that now but pretty soon you won’t be able to help it, I mean look at me, I’m never going to be able to do that.” You say, she just sits there silent taking in what i just said, “Ah so now you agree?” I ask, “NO! I mean you wouldn’t be saying that if you were a girl.” She says, you laugh and roll back over, “Wanna bet, if I was a girl my life would be way better. But you can list all of the reasons I’m wrong later, I’m passing out. Night.” You say as you drift off to sleep.

When Alex woke me up later, it had stopped raining and everyone was getting ready to go to the beach. I never thought about that conversation again until the next morning, when Hannah greeted me as...
