Chapter #8

You have an annoying itch on your back

    by: Georgie Author IconMail Icon
You've been suffering for a few minutes. There's an itch on your back that won't go away. You've tried wiggling, and unsuccessfully tried reaching the spot with your hand. You realize the only way you're going to sort it out is by taking the rucksack off so you can have a good scratch. You manage to get the rucksack off and drop it to the ground. Then you realize the itch is moving. Oh bugger. Not again. Indeed it isn't just an itch, it's another ant crawling around under your shirt.

You immediately pull off the shirt, and shake it vigorously to try to shake out any unwanted inhabitants.

“What are you doing?” Millie as she notices what you're doing.

“More ants.” you reply. “Clearly hadn't got rid of them all earlier.”

With that you check your rucksack and can see a few of the little red ants crawling around near the flap. You unclasp the flap and pull it open.

“Bugger. Looks like they got inside the bag too.”

“That means they could be anywhere.”

Yes, you think. So they could potentially be lurking in any of the clean shirts you've got in your bag. The thought of just slipping on a different shirt may not be quite so straightforward.

“Yep. Guess I'll need to empty it all out and go through everything to make sure they're all gone.”

“Well, you can't do it here. It'll have to wait until we get to the next site.”

Millie is right. There's no room here to lay everything out, and it would delay you too much anyway.

“Yes, guess you're right. We can't stop here. We'll just have to keep going.” with that you swipe at an ant you see on the rucksack with your tee shirt. That was successful – the ant is no longer on your rucksack. However you're now worried it's just transferred onto the tee shirt, which suddenly makes putting the shirt back on seem much less appealing.

“What's up now?” Millie asks, seeing your hesitation.

“Nothing. Just wondering if I've got rid of them all from the shirt. Maybe I'll leave it off for a while.”

“Well, you'll burn without it. You've have to put a load of sun cream over your shoulders and your back.”

“Yeah, guess so...” Then you glance down at yourself and remember that all you now have on are Millie's girl shorts, unicorn socks and pinks hiking shoes. Maybe you don't really want to leave the shirt off. With your slim body-frame and hairless chest, you could almost imagine someone mistaking you for a flat chested girl. You give the shirt another shake, then look dubiously at it.

“There is another option.” Millie says.

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. You could rinse the shirt out in the river

2. I could lend you one of my shirts

*Pen*
3. Something else

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
