Luckily, you really don’t have that far to go… Only three blocks. You’ve known Andy for over eight years now, ever since you entered kindergarten. So here you are, at the beginning of the new school year and it’s a Saturday morning. You get up and skate over to his house to see what he’s doing. He’s usually awake by now, but you always end up giving him a call just to be nice.
When you’re only a block away you stop and hop off the board. You take your iPhone out of your pocket and you dial his number.
“Yo!”
“Hey, Eric…” you hear a sleepy voice reply over the phone.
“Still in bed, Andy? Dang, dude! I’m a block away from your house!”
“Well… Uhh… Come over, dude… We’ll skate around my street when you get here…” he explains. “I just woke up in the middle of the night with a weird dream, that’s all…”
“You’re up late watching horror movies, dude! It’s your own fault!” you say to him. “Okay, get dressed! I’ll be there in two minutes!”
You let out a deep sigh. But, you still like the guy like a brother. He’s your best and only friend. You’re a geek and a nerd and so is he, a little bit. Since you’re both in middle school and enjoying life in the seventh grade, you help each other out all the time. You fight off thugs and bullies in school and you cheer each other on. You know one another’s darkest secrets and you know all the likes and dislikes. Andy is the closest thing you got to having a real brother. You’re both thirteen years old and you even have birthdays during the same month, only days apart!
When you finally reach the front door to his house, you hop off the board and tap the end so it flies up in the air, just high enough for you to grab the end with your hand. You turn the cap on your head back before you knock three times on the door. Andy’s mother opens up and lets you in. She tells you that he had just gotten up and that he was just getting out of the shower. So, you walk into his bedroom where you expect to see his bed still a mess.
You’re very surprised to see his sheets and blanket neatly made up and folded right by the end where the pillows are at the end of the bed. His shoes are polished and his laundry is clean and put away. All his school books are put away in the bookcase and his comic books are stored in his closet. His room actually looks very tidy!
“Hey, Eric!” Andy said, as he walked out of the bathroom.
Andy was actually an inch shorter than you, with long light-brown hair and blue eyes. His hair was long and straight and it ran past his ears, covering them completely. He still wore braces, which would show every time Andy smiled, which was often. Andy was slender but average, like a skater. You waited patiently as he got his shorts, socks and t-shirt out of his dresser and got dressed.
“Man! What took you so long? You knew I was coming! I come over every Saturday morning, dude!” you grumble.
“Eric… I fell asleep, dude! I work up like around five o’clock or something after I had this really strange dream… I don’t even remember all of it…” Andy explained to you as he put on his shirt.
“I bet you were being chased by zombies again, huh?” you laugh out loud.
“Actually… Not at all! I was in deep space… I met this beautiful woman… I think she was some kind of an angel or something… And she started talking to me about God…” Andy started telling you.
“Ohhh… Come on, dude! Don’t tell me you’re sick and you’re dying of some horrible disease, right?” you sigh.
“No, no…” Andy smiles at you. “Nothing like that! Nothing at all!”
Andy sat down at the edge of his bed as he put on his tennis shoes.
“It was something about some mighty entity looking to pass on Godly powers to me… And that I was going to be God from this point forward…” he said as he tied his laces.
“Yeah… Well I don’t see a halo above your head or wings behind your back, dude!” you laugh. “You’ve been spending too much time in church! Now, hurry up!”
“There! I’m done!” Andy said, as he jumped up from the bed and grabbed his board. “Let’s go!”
You follow behind him, carrying your board as well. You walk outside as both of you hop on your boards as you skate down the sidewalk. After a slow, quiet minute of riding down the sidewalk of your street, you pass the ice cream truck! Suddenly, you become really thirsty!
“Andy! Hey, Andy!”
“Yo!”
“I have a few quarters! Do you have any money?” you ask him.
“Yeah, I got a Dollar!” Andy says.
You hop off the board and walk up to the counter which is along the side of the truck, where the man is serving his customers.
“What will it be, you guys? The man asks you.
“Can I have a scoop of chocolate on a cone?” you ask him.
“Give me a scoop of vanilla on a cone, please!” Andy says, handing him a Dollar bill.
After a few moments, the man hands Andy his ice cream cone.
“I’m sorry, son… I think I ran out of chocolate…” the man said to you.
“Uhh… Are you sure you checked your freezer all the way?” Andy said to him.
“Well… I’ll check again, just to make you guys happy!” the man replied. “But, I’m pretty sure of it!”
The man turned around and raised the lid on the large freezer in the back corner. He rummaged around, moving small packages containing ice cream around, lifting and moving packages so he can reach all the way to the bottom of the freezer.
“No… I don’t see a single pack of chocolate… OH! Wait a minute… Goodness!” the man shouted. “Ohmygosh! You are sooooooo lucky!!!”
The man turned around, holding a pack of chocolate ice cream in his hands.
“Look what I found! The last one! Buried under all the other ones!” he smiled as he pulled the lid off and started scooping up some ice cream on a cone for you.
“There! That will be one Dollar!”
You reach down in your pocket and pull out three dimes and two nickels and two pennies…
“Ohhh crap…” you groan, “Don’t tell me I don’t have enough money to buy a stupid ice cream cone!”
“Uhhh… Check your other pocket…” Andy suggested to you.
“I never carry change in my left pocket, just in my right pocket!” you explain. “I’m right-handed!”
“Well… Look anyway!”
You grudgingly shove your hand into your left pocket, not expecting to find anything, when you feel something hard! Several hard things! You pull them out and realize you had two additional quarters in your hand!
“There! I got it!” you cheer, counting a Dollar in change on the counter.
The ice cream vendor happily hands you the ice cream cone as you and Andy turn around and walk off, both of you carrying your boards in one hand and your ice cream cones in the other hands.
“Dude… It must be my lucky day because I was sweating it for a brief moment…” you quietly say to Andy. “First, it seemed like he didn’t have the ice cream I wanted, and then it almost seemed like I didn’t have enough money to pay for the ice cream in the first place! After all that! What a lucky break!”
Andy just stared at you with a wide grin on his face, without saying a word.
“Yup… Today’s your lucky day, Eric…”
You just smirk as you look back at him.
“I still think that dream you had this morning was totally weird… I mean… If you really were God then you could make really cool things happen, right?” you chuckle.
Andy just shrugged.
“I guess so!”
Then…
