Chapter #5Consoling Tara by: Unknown Tara sniffs once, then buries her face in her hands and starts to sob. Oh great, you think, I made her cry just be asking her if she wanted to talk. You decide to try and calm her down, sitting next to her on the bed and gently stroking her back. "Please don't cry." You say. "I'm sorry if I hurt you.”
Tara shakes her head, turning to look at you, her eyes streaked with tears. "It's not you." She says. "Then why are you crying?" Tara sighs, staring at the floor. "You really want to know?" You nod.
"All my life I've had it hard." Tara says. " As a child, I was often picked on for my tail being so long. It didn't help that my full name is Tara Longtail. I would often get into fights at school, and I ended up getting expelled. I never exactly loved my parents either. They were still treating me like I was two when I was fifteen! That’s why I was so upset with Sasha, I don’t like being treated like a child. So I ran away from home.”
You listen to Tara intently. Now you begin to see why she was normally so bitter and mean. You couldn’t help but feel sorry for her, and on some levels you could relate to her. You were often bullied in school too, and you didn’t have many friends either. Hell, you never even went on a date.
You continue stroke Tara’s back as she continues, seeming to calm down. “For a few months I lived on the streets alone, eating out of garbage cans. During that time I became addicted to milk, cream, dairy in general. We cats naturally have a taste for the stuff, but it became a constant craving for me. Sometimes at night, when everybody is asleep, I’ll sneak out of the house to Bess’s stall and suck it out of her myself.”
Tara scoots closer to you and lays her head on your shoulder, her tail wrapping around your waist. “Then one day, I met this guy who said he felt pity for me, and he wanted to help me. He invited me to come stay with him. He even treated me to the first decent meal I had eaten in months. But when we got to his house, he said I wasn’t going to get to stay there for free. I told him I had no money, but that wasn’t what he was talking about. “
You instantly knew where her story was going, and tears began to flow from her eyes again. “Needless to say, he soon realized his mistake after I clawed him in the eyes and escaped. That’s when I swore to never trust anyone, ever again.”
“But here you are telling me your life story when only yesterday you wanted to kill me.” You say. “So you must trust me to some degree.” Tara doesn’t respond. Instead, she looks you in the eyes and suddenly grabs you in a hug. “Thank you.” She says. “I’ve never really had someone to talk to about this stuff. Now that I’ve gotten it off my chest, I feel much better.”
You hug her back and say, “If you ever want to talk again, I’ll be right here.” Then, you realize one thing about her story that didn’t make sense. “Wait a minute.” You say. “You said you went to school and lived on the streets. But that couldn’t have been around here, or anywhere on this planet! Where did you come from? I mean you, Sasha, all of you.”
Tara hesitates for a moment before saying……. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
