You've invented a lot of interesting devices and machines over the last few years and early on you would test them out on yourself first. However what worked in theory didn't always work in practice or had a few bugs to sort out. You still remember the time you accidentally made the memory wiping machine about twenty times and you finally realized your mistake once you were out of parts. There was also the robot butler you made that went Rogue and tried to control every aspect of your life, done to what you were allowed to eat and when and when you could go to the bathroom. Your most embarrassing invention was the AI you put on your phone to auto reply to people when they called or messaged, there was a bug in that programing where it started spilling personal details.
This is why you turned to Erika as your test subject. Sure Kyle would was more willing but for some reason, you just liked using Erika. It's a good thing you turned to her too as the time you invented the shrink ray, you hadn't figured out how to re-enlarge something. So had you used it on yourself there was a chance you would've never unshrunk. Erika didn't seem to like wearing doll clothes or living in a hamster cage for that week but it was a good learning experience for you. Then there was the time Kyle got his hands on your age manipulating device and you had to babysit him for the weekend until you figured it out. It took you a lot longer too as you had been turned into an old man.
Your last device you invented had the ability to transform people in their entirety. You transmorpher was a powerful invention but it required too much power, though it could turn anyone into anything. You didn't risk inanimate as you weren't sure what that would do to a living person but you did turn Erika into a bat. Her goth look reminded you of a vampire so you thought it'd be funny. It took almost a month to transform her back, in the mean time she was living it the attic on a diet of crickets. She still hadn't forgiven you for that.
While the transmorpher and the age manipulator didn't work out how you wanted them to, there was a pattern emerging, one to change people into different ages and different bodies and that's what inspired the body swap machine. It was a lot safer than the transmorpher and more efficient. Still there were a few issues that could arise from it, your main concerns were not being able to swap back and erasing someone's personality entirely. For the second one you had saved up backups for everyone's minds in the house, after the memory wipe incident and that usually uploaded new scans every week. As for being stuck, you could also use those same scans to fix someone if the need arose.
So you had backup plans if things failed but you wouldn't know if they failed without testing your machine first. Messing with someone's mind and body would be dangerous, messing with your own could be disastrous. So once again you needed test subjects to test your new machine...
