Chapter #7

Going to school

    by: Unknown
Your time driving to school was spent pondering the situation you had found yourself in. You were stuck as your mother for the next week, all because your dad was paranoid about the things that could go wrong with the machine. You would've been amazed and happy to try out this new life if it wasn't so embarrassing and if it was something you had chosen. But it was either this or let your father destroy the machine and that wasn't going to happen. What's worse is you got stuck with doing your mother's job straight away, which was partially your fault as it was one of your inventions that made Erika sick in the first place.

Thinking of Erika made you realize this wasn't as bad as it could get. If Erika and Kyle knew about the swap, they'd have a field day tormenting you. Kyle just for fun and Erika, she has multiple scores to settle with you. That's assuming they didn't know already, you three were pretty loud in the garage.

"Why didn't I secure the machine..." you groaned, as you pulled up into the school parking lot. At least you knew your way to your mother's work. Though you were lucky to make it there in one piece, given how poorly you drove. You found a spot in the staff parking and pulled into it, something you struggled with and took many attempts.

You stepped out of the car and sighed again as you almost forgot your mother's handbag. You swung it over your shoulder, locked the car and threw the keys into the handbag. That's when you noticed your mother's phone light up. You pulled it out and saw that it had several messages from your phone. You struggled to unlock the phone with your nails and saw that you had been texted with instructions for where to go and what to do when you first arrived at the school.

First you signed in at the office and then headed towards the staff room. The door was unlocked as it was fall of teachers. "Good morning, Kim." Several of them greeted. You recognised some when you were at this school and one or two others from dinner parties but there were a few you didn't know. You just smiled and waved and headed to your mother's desk.

"Everything alright, Kim?" You were asked by Heather. "You don't seem like yourself, usually you're more... energetic and a bit more clumsy."

"Yeah..." you replied in a tone that didn't sound convincing as you pulled out your mother's work binder. It was a good thing she could be a little ditzy because it made her colour co-ordinate and date everything she planned to do school wise. "Sorry. da.. Mark and Luke got into a disagreement this morning. I got caught in the middle of it," you decided to reply with a half truth. "It's an on going issue, though I have confidence I'll have it sorted by next week."

"One of Luke's inventions?" Heather asked. Causing you to perk up a little. You honestly didn't think that Heather would know about them. Though there's been a couple of times your mother has played around with the things you've invented.

"Yeah, Mark wanted to destroy something Luke spent a lot of time on. I wouldn't let him, and now we've come up with a compromise, one that puts me in a bit of an awkward situation," you vent to Heather. You find it easy actually, it came natural.

"Oh, I'm sure," Heather gave a knowing smile. "It's a good thing you prepare your lesson's ahead of time. Though I'm here if you need a hand or want to talk about the issue further. Bye." You watched Heather grab her own binder and leave the staffroom. You had no doubt that she knew about your situation but you couldn't confirm it with her.

You reached for your phone and went to call your mother when the department head scowled at you. "This is no time to be using your phone, you've got a class to teach," she pointed to the clock. It was almost time for school to start. So you quickly skimmed through the binder and grabbed all relevant work and headed to class.
