Shy Maddie

Despite her withdrawn personality, Maddie could have rivaled any of the 'pretty' girls in school. Unfortunately, she often concealed her good looks with long bangs and heavy sweaters. I was the only one in class to see her true beauty; both on the outside and in her heart.

However, in recent months she had become far more anti-social than normal. While in the past we often walked to school together, lately she had been avoiding me... leaving for school at random times and cancelling our tutoring sessions. I was growing increasingly worried, and was preparing to confront her after school was over for the summer. But before I got the chance, she had appeared at my front door with a single message:

"Meet me at my house on the first day of summer break. Don't tell your parents or your sister."

I tried to ask what was going on, but Maddie bolted before I could speak a word. She had certainly peaked my curiosity with her bizarre behavior. I only hoped that it wasn't anything serious.

Finally, the day of our meeting was here. I slapped on a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, scarfed some cereal, and told my Mom I would be gone for the day. She merely nodded, and went back to whatever motherly task she had been working on. And since Maddie lived next door, she was merely yards away if I needed her.

Leaving out the backyard door, I sauntered over to the fence dividing our properties. With practiced ease, I scaled it and hopped onto Maddie's lawn. Approaching her patio door, I noticed it was slightly ajar. I assumed it was Maddie's way of saying, 'Welcome'.

Fully opening the sliding glass door, I entered into the cool air of Maddie's family room. I suspected that her family was more or less in the same financial position as my own as we shared similiar furniture.

"Hello? Maddie?" I called out. "You here?"

A response came echoing from the basement. "Come down here. Hurry!"

There was a strange urgency in her voice, so I half-walked, half-ran to the basement stairwell. Racing down into the damp cold of the half-finished cellar, I spotted Maddie sitting among a stack of cardboard boxes. Before I had even taken a step, she said...
