Chapter #4

"Can I tell you something private?"

Taken slightly aback, I quickly responded: "Of course you can Maddie. You know you can tell me anything...is this why you've been so out of it these last few months?"

She blushed a little bit. "Was I that obvious?" I could only give her a deadpan stare. "Yeah this is why. I...found something. Well...somePLACE. It's really cool! And completely secret! Even if it takes some time to get there. And I thought I could surprise you with it, after school ended. So I've been...preparing."

"Preparing? Preparing for what?"

She started rambling a little bit. "You! Sort of. I've slowly been making it 'livable'. So to speak. That way we can hang out there or have sleepovers like we used to or something. I just..." She paused like she was thinking about how to say this next bit. "I'm trying...to impress you..."

That threw me for a loop. Impress me? Why? "Maddie. We've been friends since we were in diapers. You don't need to impress me. I already think you're awesome."

She visibly turned quite red. "It's just...you let yourself be open to the world for anyone to know who you are and what you like and think. Plus with all the times you've stood up for me..." I sighed. She was referring to people bullying her for being shy and hiding behind hoodies and bangs. Which I of course never let slide. "I just wanted to impress you the way you always impress me..."

I didn't know what to say. That was really moving. I never thought I did anything special but apparently she did. She looked really embarrassed so I decided to ease the tension with a joke. "Well you could always wear t-shirts more. Make it easier to tickle your sides."

She snorted and cracked a small grin at that. "I think I'll keep the hoodies for now. I think you've proven more than enough that I'm plenty ticklish in heavy apparel.. Let alone lighter clothing."

Mission accomplished. But as for this place..."Alright Maddie. Let's see this super cool secret place you've been making liveable."

Maddie's face lit up like a Christmas Tree. "Oh don't worry you're gonna love it! Just let me go upstairs and get ready real quick."

"Get ready? Where is this place?"

"It's a bit of a distance. There's this...."
