This choice: She offers more than just information. • Go Back...Chapter #3She offers more than just information. by: kamper “You see Caleb I don’t have much time and you are perfect for what I have in mind. What if I told you I was a vampire?” she asked as she partially rambled but looked at you with her blood red eyes that always fascinated you. From a distance they looked brown but when someone was this close they were unmistakably red. She seemed unusually serious and anxious as she asked you this. That made you wonder and almost accept that she might be one. You thought about it for a moment and she sat there patiently for your answer as the minutes went by.
“I… I guess I would have a lot of questions and be skeptical to say the least. Like I said Miss. Isibelle, I don’t know what one is like. So if you were one and you were evil then I would politely ask to leave or offer my life for you to spar my family in the future. But… if you were and you weren’t evil than… I would have to say… I would be a little… nervous and full of questions. I mean, I’ve seen you come out into the sunlight before and everything I’ve ever known or seen in movies say that sunlight kills Vampires so…” you answered as you stuttered and nervously tried to tiptoe around how you said it but you weren’t very good with words and more often than not put your foot in your mouth.
“Caleb… you really are a wonderful boy and will grow to be a wonderful young man.” She said as she was obviously hiding something at this point and you had both a fear and hope that is was her being a Vampire. But if that was the case then what did she want with you? “Caleb, I am going to be completely honest with you. I am a Vampire.” She said bluntly but segmented it so that you were ready to receive the information. The fact hit you and you braced against the chair a little. You stared at her wide eyed for a moment but then looked passed her as you processed what she said. You brought the option of her joking but her expression had been strangely serious all day. All the little details about her made sense if you threw in the Vampire angle. Perhaps it was because you were so young but you found yourself believing her and wanting to know more.
“I… M… Miss. Isibelle? If you are… what do you want with me?” you asked, obviously nervous and she could obviously see it.
“Caleb, I told you already that I wouldn’t harm you and that I don’t have much time.” She said as she put a hand on yours but you went rigid to her touch and wondered why her hand wasn’t as cold as you would think a vampire’s hand would be, granted it was colder than normal people’s but not freezing like in the movies. She retracted her hand as she saw it doing more harm than good then waited for you to respond. She put on a smile that she knew you liked despite the fact that she obviously didn’t like how you were taking it. This realization hit you and you calmed down a little, took a deep breath, then continued.
“I… I meant why you have me here?” you asked with a clear sign that you were wondering if she was needing you blood.
“Oh… oh that’s what you meant. No Caleb, I am not going to suck your blood. If it makes you feel better I am not evil. If I was, do you think I could go to church with you?” She asked.
“No, if you were evil that God wouldn’t allow you to go inside much less touch the Bible and other stuff inside.” You answered and became a little more relaxed now that she revealed that much. “Miss. Isibelle, I don’t wish to be rude but… can you show me? I am having a hard time believing it. I trust you but I… well you don’t fit hardly any of what I would expect from a Vampire. Like I said, I’ve seen you in the sunlight and you aren’t pale by any means.” You asked.
“Ok, I can show you a little.” She said. First she smiled then lifted her lip and her fangs shot out about an inch passed her other teeth then she retracted them as you reeled back a little but stayed seated. Next she held out her hand and it evaporated into ash then came back. Lastly she produced some fire on it’s palm then clenched it to put the flame out. “I’m afraid that is all I can do at the moment. You see, I worked hard over the years to put those conceptions of Vampires out there for the world to see. That way if someone were to say that I was one I could just walk outside into the sun and prove them wrong. I don’t have to drink blood and when I do it doesn’t have to be human. But blood is like gas for my vampire powers and I haven’t drank any for… about 20 years. So I am understandably weak at the moment.” She explained.
“Ok, but I must ask again; why am I here?” you asked, not sure why she was telling all this to you, a 12 year old human all her secrets. It was as if she could read your mind as she continued.
“Caleb, unlike the legends that I helped create, Vampires can’t live forever. I am not Immortal in that aspect. And I can’t infect others like the legends say. I am the only vampire and I can only live for 2100 years. Then, wither I want to or not, I will turn to ash and this gift will be passed to another randomly. The only way for me to ensure that the next vampire is one of my choosing is to pass on the gift myself to someone I deem worthy and I’ve chosen you.” She explained and the last bit hit you hard. You couldn’t believe what you were hearing. You had so many questions and so many concerns that you started to feel light headed. “Calm down.” She said in a voice that commanded your body to obey and you did as she commanded or rather your body did. It was obvious to you that it was one of her powers but which one?
“You… you want to make me… a… Vampire?” you asked in disbelief.
“Not a Vampire Caleb, the Vampire. You would be the only one as there are no others, just me and no way to change that. I only added that part to the legend to add another reason why I wasn’t one if one were to track me here. I know you have many questions but unfortunately I am running out of time. You see it will be 2100 years tomorrow and I have chosen you to receive this gift. I can answer your questions until late into the night but know that if you don’t accept I must find someone that will. I won’t force you Caleb.” She said with her usual kindness in her voice. You never expected her to be a vampire, and now that she was one you didn’t think she would be so nice and gentle. You had so many questions but she an answer or to find someone else very quickly.
