You are not really the most popular person around. In fact you were pretty pathetic socially and were clueless when it came to relationships and the opposite sex. However your loving family was more than enough to compensate for that. You were overall average and nice guy by many standards. Brown hair, average size, brown eyes, a thick German build (from your father’s side), skinny despite the average weight class in your family adults was 350 lbs and the children usually followed suit. You had glasses but wasn’t exactly a book nerd. In fact if you were than you probably would’ve gotten better at school. No you mostly worked with your father and your brothers with odd jobs for no profit at church, your multiple relative’s homes, charities that your family and church was involved in, and other people around your neighborhood. Because of this you and your brothers had lots of naturally strong muscles but not a lot of show like those in your class that were already lifting weights and getting a desirable figure. Your older sister was starting to rebel a little as she hit high school, as well as trying to get some boys to like her. It was always fun to see your father talk with the boys that called for her.
One of the things you did was mow the lawn and shovel for the entire neighborhood. And not with a snow blower or riding lawn mower, no those cost way too much. You and your brothers used three pushing lawn mowers for mowing the lawn and shovels for… well shoveling snow, and in Wisconsin you had a lot of it at periodic times. And of course after you got done with your neighborhood you still had your grandparents’ houses and the church to do. But for all the work you did it did give you a sense of pride at the end of the day, that you were able to get so much done and make so many people happy. You loved to watch people’s faces when they came to give you money for your hard work and you just told them that you wanted to do it and not for the money. They would first try to force you to take it but after you insisted not to they would look at you as if you were an angel in troubled times. Perhaps that is why your father made you and your brothers do it like that.
“Now we’ll have none of that young man. I insist that you at least get a nice cold drink for your efforts.” Said a pretty young woman by the name of Isibelle.
She was one of the people on the block that you visited more often, and as you grew older your family teased you for how young she looked. She had insisted the first couple times that you take something for your efforts as she didn’t liking being in dept. It took her talking with your father to have him rearrange your schedule to allow her to entertain you for your troubles. You don’t know what she said to him as he was usually unmovable in such things but now it was a weekly thing to go to her house and talk with her. You almost got the feeling that she was older than she was letting on but you didn’t mind as she talked with you about a lot of things, from philosophy to what girls you liked at school. She was like a younger version of your grandmother, on your mother’s side. You two had gotten very close in that regard so much that she would tell you things that you would think to be fiction, as you didn’t think she was old enough to remember WWII but the way she said it made you believe she was actually there.
“Thank you Miss. Isibelle.” You said with a smile as she led you into her living room with a glass of ice cold lemonade ready for you.
“How many times do I have to tell you to just call me Isibelle?” She asked.
“Well my Papa always said to speak to my elders with respect.” You answered nervously as she sounded like she was correcting you and you didn’t wish to be rude.
“Oh Caleb, you can call me anything you want. You’re such a polite young boy.” she said and hugged you to her chest. You were just getting old enough where you were beginning to shy away from such affectionate touch and she seemed to get a kick out of exploiting that embarrassing age and her good looks. However, again, the way she said it made you thing that she was your grandmother or at least that old. Only older people talked to you and your brothers like that. She let go and sat in a chair to an angle but still facing you.
“Uh, Miss. Isibelle?” you asked as you took a sip of your lemonade.
“Yes Caleb?” she asked back.
“I don’t mean to pry but you seem troubled today.” You asked as you noticed that, unlike her usual assertive nature, she was passive and reclusive today. She almost seemed like she was preparing to go away for a long trip.
“Well Caleb, I don’t suppose I can hide anything from you at this point can I? You’re such a smart boy and we’ve known each other a while haven’t we. Yes there is something I would like to ask you Caleb.” She stated to which you sat up and took a big gulp of your lemonade before placing it on a coaster and paying strict attention to her, trying not to look down her neckline or up her skirt. “W… what do you think about vampires?” she asked rather blunt but shakily.
“Uh… I don’t really know what you mean.” You returned.
“Well, what do you think about them. I mean, you go to church and stuff so you must think something about them. Plus you have a rather open mind so I was wondering what you thought of them.” she said. You knew that she also went to church and lately to the same one you and your family went to.
“Well Papa sais their fake… if that’s what you mean. But I guess if they were real... I don’t know. People at church say that they would be evil but I’ve never really read anywhere in the Bible that says anything against Vampires in particular. I guess it would be hard to say without knowing what one actually is like. I mean if they are really evil then I wouldn’t like them very much, but if they are nice like you then I wouldn’t mind meeting one. Actually I really like movies with them in it and sometimes pretend at home that I am one. It is fun to play with sometimes and I always dress up as one on Halloween.” You said as you rambled. But she seemed to really smile when you said you would like them if they were ‘as nice as her’.
“Caleb, do you trust me?” she asked.
“I… sure I do. Why?” you asked.
“Well I was wondering… Ok you have to promise me something. You have to promise me that you will listen and trust that I would never harm you.” she said. The way she said it made it sound like she was about to do something like shooting an arrow at an apple on top of your head. While you might’ve politely declined and excused yourself from other people’s houses you already did trust her quite a bit. Like you had thought, she was like a young version of your Grandmother.
“I promise Miss Isibelle. I won’t run away or anything. I will stay and listen.” You said as you tried covering all the points you thought she wanted to hear. She then leaned forward in the room and in her chair to address you more seriously. Something that you had rarely seen her do. She was you usually very playful and kind so this was rather strange and nerve wrecking for you. It was a side you had never seen of her before.
