Chapter #6

Lexie heads to class with Sax on her mind

    by: wowee Author IconMail Icon
Lexie heard a bell ring from somewhere far off and remembered that classes were taking place today. She had enrolled late and this was Monday after all, the school certainly didn't stop just because she was late. Throwing her luggage next to the single bed of the large dormitory bedroom, she cursed herself once more as she recalled another negative of enrolling late into the academy: she would not be getting a roommate. At least not initially it seemed, she supposed that Buttercombe kept a few spare rooms opens for any extra or late arrivals, but as for now it appeared she would be doing the whole "new school" thing alone.

Well, no time to dwell on the negatives, she would at least make a good impression on her fist day here damn it! Lexie hurried to the bathroom knowing she had little under an hour to make sure she was looking her very best. After a quick shower in the pristine porcelain bathroom, and thirty minutes of fine makeup and detail work Lexie was ready to strut her stuff! With her new yellow uniform tucked into a rather forcibly tight and semi-provocative fashion, a bit of blush and eyeshadow, her lips heavily glossed and of course her trusty saxophone in its case, Lexie headed off to her first class of this new school year.

It was a rather enjoyable walk to the music room. The sunlight was shining nicely in her red hair, and all of the few girls she met (mostly skinnier freshman as equally as lost as Lexie herself) seemed very friendly to her. Lexie's found that her wandering mind couldn't help but note that most of these girls seemed quite attractive too. Still a bit lost it thought Lexi found the room her first class was to be held in, a small sound proof door labeled as the entrance to the Music Room. Inside though was hardly a room, the place was large enough to fit a small orchestra!

Metal chairs crashed and clanged about as the students haphazardly found their designated section. Taking a seat among the many metal chairs, and crowded smiling faces of other students, Lexie already felt right at home here in the classroom.

"Good morning!" Came a warm voice from the front of the room. A tall, bespectacled woman now stood in front of the whiteboard at the front of the class. Taking a second to brush her curly back hair away from the front of her face the woman (who Lexie assumed would be their conductor/teacher) stood with arms wide open to greet the class in an apparent "air hug." "I'd just like to welcome you all to Jazz band here at the Buttercombe academy. My name is Vi-ola Faust" and here the curly haired woman turned her back to the class to write her name on the board behind her sounding out every syllable of her name as she wrote it. Lexie felt that due to the teacher's young looks and this terribly cliche act this was Vi's first year teaching.

"There." continued Ms. Faust adjusting her glasses. "Now, I'll be your teacher here and your conductor, but most importantly I want to be your friend, so you may all call me Ms. Faust or Vi I don't care which. I want you all to feel welcome here, so please don't be shy! If you have any questions at all come talk to me." Lexie felt she wasn't alone as she rolled her eyes, the teachers monotonous voice already droning on. "Now to all first year students let me say congratulations on making it to the academy! It's my first year here too and I know we all can expect big things ahead of us!" Again the remark dripping with overenthusiastic nature. "I understand it's first week here and I know many of you want to get to playing, but I just feel we need to wait till after the first week is over before we can work on a piece, and we find out who's really in what class. So for today I'll just be passing out a syllabus and everyone will be free to go. Of course if anyone wants to stay and jam a bit, or get to know each other that's cool too." Explained Ms. Faust reaching a slim black binder full of papers from her desk.

A murmur went up from amongst the crowd of girls, mostly approval. Papers were passed out, and most of the class dispersed. Lexie tucked the syllabus away in her saxophone case and stared at nothing in particular unsure how to feel about what just happened. She had rushed to class, toted her saxophone all the way here and now had practically a whole empty hour on her schedule. She realized that she must look a little stupid sitting and staring, unsure of what to do next...That's when she took in the room, noting the various awards the school had received over the years, all while remaining ignorant of the corpulent consensus about her.

Turning her eyes from the awards shelf, Lexie was surprised to see that of the few girls who had stayed, one was actually checking HER out. Lexie returned the eye contact, and then was given a small hand wave as if asking if Lexie was up for a bit of chatting. Lexie was, and with a nod she walked over to...
