(note: this is an AU version of the bread scene from the movie. I hope that is close enough to the graphic novel that people aren't out of character.)
"This is actually really good garlic bread." Ramona mused as she sat next to Scott, with garlic bread placed between them. Scott nodded. "Garlic bread is my favorite food. I could honestly eat it for every meal. or just eat it all the time without even stopping." "You'd get fat." Ramona replied. Scott smiled, pretending not to believe her. Damn, his plan wasn't working! You see, Scott was secretly an FA, which meant he liked fat girls. although he had always been too shy to admit this to anyone. And to tell the truth, although he already liked Ramona a lot, and felt a strong connection with her that had been absent from his previous relationships,, he wished there was more of her to love. He wanted her to get fat, and although it made him feel guilty, he had been trying to manipulate Ramona into eating fattening food, like this garlic bread, so that she would gain weight, 'But if she's already sensitive about fatness...this plan may not work.' Scott thought.
"Now, why would I get fat?" "Bread makes you fat." Before Scott could reply, Ramona added, "Actually, that's exactly why I shouldn't be eating any of this." The (currently) blue haired girl pushed her plate of bread away toward the serving plate while smiling nervously. Scott put down his bread as well. "What are you talking about?!" Scott gesture to Ramona's slim body. "You are nowhere near fat! In fact, if you don't mind me saying so, you could afford to gain a few pounds!" Ramona shot Scott a glare. Had he said something wrong? "Just drop it! You don't know anything!"
Scott scooted back several inches, taken aback by Ramona's shouting as his date turned away from him and crossed her arms. "Look, if I said something to offend you, I'm sorry..." Ramona turned around, letting her arms drop to he sides. "No, I'm sorry, I'm just really sensitive about keeping my figure. You see..." Ramona hesitated a second before continuing. "My older sister wasn't fat, either, two years ago. My mom was really skinny too, eight years ago. Heck, even my grandmother was skinny until she hit her 40's. But they..." She looked at Scott, and he could tell it was all the tough girl could do to keep from crying. This was, by far, the most vulnerable he had seen her. "They're all really fat now. All the women in my family eventually get fat!" Scott was taken aback by his date's confession, and it took every ounce of restraint he had not to smile as she plowed on. "Every single female in my family for like, ever, had gotten fat at some point, and they could never get slim again.. We're actually surprisingly healthy, and many of us live long lives, but we get fat." Ramona laughed. "It's funny, I've never told any of my exes that info, and I told you after knowing you all of what, five minutes!?" "A little longer than that, but I get your point. Maybe you just feel like you can trust me?" Ramona laughed louder. "Yeah right....I... I don't even know you!" But even she knew that the words sounded forced. As absurd as it was, she already did sort of trust the band geek. All things considered, trusting a person she had just met was not the most impulsive thing she had ever done. Not at all. But it was new and scary territory for her, and she didn't really know what to say right now.
Scott shrugged. "Well there has got to be some reason you told me. Anyway. you still haven't told me why you shouldn't eat the rest of your garlic bread." Ramona gave Scott a look that clearly indicating she was having doubts about Scott's IQ. "I just told you, stuff like this would make me fat! How many times do I have to explain..." Scott held up his hand."Yes, but didn't you say that ALL the women in your family eventually get fat, anyway?" Ramona scrunched up her nose and narrowed her eyes on confusion. "Yeah, it's really weird, actually. My grandmother is an athlete , a real fitness junkie, and she always used to eat super healthy. But then she hit forty, and the pounds just started piling on her body anyway. It was like her metabolism just crashed overnight for no reason. Anyway, she tried numerous diets for about ten years to try to lose weight, but they all made her gain weight faster in the end. When she hit year eleven, she was over 300 pounds,so she gave up. Now she just eats whatever she wants all the time, and lots of it. She still exercises though. In fact, even though she's over 60 years old and 400 pounds, she's still probably in better shape then I am. Still, It's kind of depressing. I mean, if she couldn't keep herself from getting fat, what hope do I have to stay slim?" Ramona looked Scott right in the eye. "Sorry, I'm probably being a buzz kill. I guess you probably didn't want to hear your date is a future fatty, huh?" Scott finally couldn't help himself, and a smile crept onto his fact. "Actually, I don't mind at all. In fact,as I was just telling you, you could afford to gain a few pounds if you wanted. Or several hundred. Whatever. I'm sure you would look great at any weight, actually." Ramona laughed. Hard. She fell to the floor in a full on fit of giggles, and continued to laugh for about a minute, until it hurt to breathe and tears were coming out of her eyes. Scott just sat there, crossing his arms and pretending to pay a lot of attention to his shoe laces. 'You let the cat out of the bag AND got her to laugh at you on your first date. Reals smooth, Scott!' He thought sarcastically. Ramona finally stopped laughing, and resumed sitting upright. "I was trying to be serious with you, Scott." "So was I." Scott continued staring at his shoes.
Ramona looked at the obviously embarrassed young man in front of her, until it finally clicked in her head. "Oh my God! You were being serious!" Scott nodded, but still refused to look her in the eye as she resumed talking. "I'm sorry, I thought you were making fun of me." "I would never do that!" The blue haired girl nodded. 'More strangeness from this one, then.' Ramona thought to herself. 'I've dated a lot of interesting characters in my time, but no one like this.' "So that makes you...what? A chubby chaser?"
"I prefer the term 'FA'.." "You mean fat admirer, and I'm guessing a feeder?" Scott nodded numbly, confusion written all over his face. " Don't look so surprised, I work for a web based company, and I've seen a lot of things on the internet, some of which would freak YOU out! So what, were you planning to force feed me or something, cause I can tell you right now, that isn't going to happen!" Scott looked up and raised his hands in the air in protest. "No! I was kind of hoping you would fill out on your own if I kept food around you and kept assuring you that you look good and...I sound like a real jerk right now, don't I?" "Yep. And more than a little manipulative..." Scott nodded, he knew he deserved that. "But a manipulative jerk is actually a step up from some of my other relationships." Scott turned his head to face Ramona. "What could be worse than that?" "Evil. Some of my exes are...I don't want to get into that right now.The point is, at least you weren't trying to force me to do anything. and all attempts at manipulation aside, you actually seem like a caring and sensitive guy. Plus...for some inexplicable reason, I do trust you a little, so I'm going to give you a second chance, as long as you promise not to be manipulative anymore." The "band geek" sighed with relief. "Yes! Of course!" Then, with a grin, he added. "I promise to be completely upfront about all my weirdness and attempts to fatten you up from now on!" Ramona stared blankly at Scott, long enough for the young man to worry he'd overplayed his hand with that last remark. But then Ramona grinned. "Wow. That was honest! Ok, I guess I can live with that. I mean, at least if I date you, I won't have to worry about getting too fat for you anytime soon!"
Scott nodded. "Speaking of which..." Scott pushed the remainder of Ramona's garlic bread on a plate toward her, along with his own leftovers. "I think you should eat this. You've kept looking at it ever since you put it down and said you weren't going to eat anymore. Besides, if you're going to become fat anyway, you might as well get it over with and get used to life in the fat lane." Scott spoke with the gentlest tone he could manage, so his date would know their was no malice behind his words. Ramona looked at the garlic bread with uncertainty. She WAS still hungry, and the garlic bread she had kept glancing at was really good. The best she'd ever tasted in fact. Even so, she knew that. like many in her family, she loved food a little too much, and that if she started splurging now, it would soon become a habit. "Are you asking me to get fat, then?" Scott hesitated, then nodded. "Cause I should warn you, If I choose to start down that path, I may not be able to stop, and I might get too big even for you!" "Impossible!" "Are you sure? My mom currently weighs over 500 pounds, that's over 4 times my size. What If I got that big!?" "Than you would be over 4 times as hot as you currently are, and that is saying something!" Ramona blushed as Scott continued. "Look, I'm not trying to force anything here. I think you're awesome just the way you are, and If you choose to stay this size, I would still like to see what could happen between us, and if we are relationship material. Whatever you decide, I kind of hope we are, because I...sort of feel connected to you already and..." Scott shook his head "I'm no good about talking about this stuff, Do you understand what I'm trying to say?" "Yes, and I think I feel the same way. And as for your little proposal..."
