Evan put up with Alex's annoying friends all day. In class it wasn't too bad as they weren't supposed to be talking. There was a note or two passed to him but he didn't respond. Lily seemed to show up to walk him to every class. Evan finally found Alex at lunch. She was with Amy. Lily was with Evan as she insisted on coming. He assumed it was because he said he was sick.
"Alex, I have to talk to you," you said.
"So talk."
"I mean alone."
"I know what you have to say, but let's do it after school when we get home."
"I don't want to wait that long."
"You'll have to. It's only a few hours."
"Fine." There was nothing Evan could do. She had to agree to the swap or it wouldn't work.
After school when they were dropped off at the door. "OK, before we go in, let's swap back."
"Awww so soon, I was having so much fun with Amy."
"Yeah you were putting it on thick."
"Evan I have something to say. I have never told anyone, not even Mom. Well, I'm gay."
"You're gay?"
"Yes, Lily is my girlfriend. We have been 'seeing each other' for over a year now."
It all made sense. Now Evan knew why Lily was always around. He had assumed that she was just annoying and needy, but it wasn't that. She saw him as a girlfriend would. She wanted to be around Evan. "Oh, I understand," he said. "Well I'm sure you want to get back to your girlfriend and I can get back to mine."
"But isn't Lily sweet?"
"She's only fifteen, too young for me."
"I see, I prefer older women too."
"TMI!!! Let's swap."
"OK, let's do it."
Evan did as he had before, and just like before he didn't feel any different. He assumed it worked, but what he didn't know was that Alex liked his girlfriend; she always had and didn't want to give her up. Not her nor old older friends. She said she agreed, but she hadn't in her heart, so nothing changed.
