Marina needed to destroy the portal, so no enemy forces could use it. They had already gotten through to this side, it was no stretch of the imagination that there would be many more servants on the other side. Many years of labor and magical power had gone into the making of this portal and she was going to destroy the portal in one day. She set magical explosive charges and moved back to a safe distance so she could watch the end. A giant explosion of blue flames flew up to light up the sky but the magic user’s spell held preventing damage to the surrounding forest. A tear dropped down her cheek as she felt the magic fade and started walking past the rubble towards the army of Dreze.
She had worked on this portal with Ari and her master who had passed away years ago. It was like losing a part of her master that she could never get back. As for Ari, she would save her friend’s family despite her actions. Marina wished her friend had trusted her but she would deal with that later. There would need to be serious consequences for betraying the council, and she couldn’t protect her friend from that threat. It was likely going to be a stripping her of magic for betraying them to work for Dreze, whatever the reason.
The Kingdom of Dar was one of the few places magic was accepted and allowed to be practiced openly with only reasonable restrictions. Even necromancy was allowed with some supervision. Most kingdoms were afraid of magic users with very good reasons, because most people had no protection against magic, so the council of magic users in Dar was very careful to see they had no reason to fear magic. The punishments were harsh but they needed to calm the fears of the people.
Ari had been a fool to trust Dreze would keep his word that he would free her family. The man wouldn’t release his hold on a powerful spell caster. The man ruled with fear and power over his people. No one was allowed to become powerful in his kingdom without being bound to him. She shuddered at the thought of having one of his slave collars around her neck.
She would need to make a decision on her next course of action. If his forces had been gathering around the portal striking his front lines might have a devastating effect, and allow the army’s of King Emeril to push forward, or she could seek out the leader to cut off the head of the snake who was likely hiding behind the walls of his palace but her heart called for her to help the family of her friend first. It might not be the best choice because she had no idea where they were. There were several prisons or slave camps he could be keeping them at, but it would at least feel good to free the prisoners and she might get aid from them or be able to start a resistance.
